Democracy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Democracy is often implemented as a form of government in which policy is decided by the preference of the real majority (as opposed to a partial or relative majority of the demos/citizens) in a decision-making process, usually elections or referenda, open to all or most citizens.
In modern democracies, the territory is the nation-state, and since this corresponds (in theory) with the homeland of the nation, the demos and the reach of the democratic process neatly coincide.
Liberal democracy is, strictly speaking, a form of representative democracy where the political power of the government is moderated by a constitution which protects the rights and freedoms of individuals and minorities (also called constitutional liberalism).

Democracy - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Democracy is a form of government under which the power to alter the laws and structures of government lies, ultimately, with the citizenry.
The word democracy originates from the Greek δημοκρατíα from δημος meaning "the people", plus κρατειν meaning "to rule", and the suffix íα; the term therefore means "rule by the people." The term is also sometimes used as a measurement of how much influence a people has over their government, as in how much democracy exists.
Liberal democracy is sometimes the de facto form of government, while other forms are technically the case; for example, Canada has a monarchy, but is in fact ruled by a democratically elected Parliament.

Once the rally started we stood facing them waving our Americans flags, which were noticeably absent from their crowd (They're patriots, too, damn it!) The only flags they waved were a United Nations flag calling for a world government and one that mocked the Niemoller poem about the Holocaust ("When they came for the Jews...").
