Although little has been written about the SOG and its troops, a picture of the unit’s activities can be reconstructed and studied from several of the verbal and written sources that have been made public.
To provide the SOG and the United States some form of plausible denial (albeit weak) for personnel who might be captured, the SOG units frequently had maps printed with distorted international boundary lines.
SOG operations provided a considerable amount of intelligence data to Washington and Saigon on North Vietnamese troop movements along those portions of the Ho Chi Minh Trail that were patrolled by the OPS-35 forces.

It is studying the data received from the Cassini mission on its way to Saturn and the NEAR mission in orbit about the asteroid 433 Eros.
It is studying magnetic pulsations both to determine their origin and to use them as diagnoses of the state of the magnetosphere and it is using numerical simulations both as an extrapolation of localized data and as a tool to investigate magnetospheric behavior.

 Space Physics Group Activites 2001-2002
It studies the data received from the Cassini mission on its way to Saturn and the NEAR mission in orbit about the asteroid 433 Eros both to understand the physical process occurring at planetary bodies and to understand the structure and dynamics of the magnetized plasmas in interplanetary space.
It studies magnetic pulsations both to determine their origin and to use them as diagnoses of the state of the magnetosphere and it uses numerical simulations both as an extrapolation of localized data and as a tool to investigate magnetospheric behavior.
The study also showed that most of the observed small scale variations that are typically superimposed on the parameters that define the PDL are temporal variations and have nothing to do with the intrinsic PDL structure.

 Single Molecule Diffusion in Gels
Since our initial observations of single molecules in 1989, the studies performed by many different groups have significantly furthered the understanding of single molecule behavior in low temperature glasses and crystals.
By employing the exquisite local environmental sensitivity that single molecule studies enable, we are deciphering biomolecular mechanisms that are obscured in bulk biological studies.
Studies of the naturally fluorescent Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP), for example, have identified both blinking and optical switching behavior on the single molecule level (please refer to our recent article in Nature).

The leading historian of SOG, the elite commando unit in Vietnam, tells the astonishing story of the SOG warriors who penetrated enemy lines in operations directed at the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
The warriors of SOG – code-named the Studies and Observations Group – were a secret operations force in Vietnam, the forerunner of today's Delta Force and SEALs.
SOG warriors secretly penetrated deep into Laos and Cambodia to identify bombing targets, destroy troops, ambush trucks, mine roads, and, in their most difficult assignment, capture North Vietnamese soldiers for intelligence purposes.

MACV-SOG--Military Assistance Command, Vietnam--Special Operations Group (later renamed Studies and Observations Group)--was the elite military unit of the Vietnam War, so secret that its existence was denied by the U.S. government.
The group reported directly to the Pentagon's Joint Chiefs of Staff, and much of its history and exploits were concealed for years from the general public by a veil of secrecy and confidentiality.

Such transformations include hydrogen evolution by proton reduction (vide infra), and the reduction of robust C1 substrates such as CO and CO All of these studies require of us the constant design and re-design of auxiliary ligands that are critical to the properties of the coordinated metal ion, and hence the chemistry that is realized.
We are pursuing studies along these lines at present, and also using the methods of synthesis and spectroscopy to prepare and probe the photophysics of a range of related dicopper, CuZn, and other bimetallics to explore their structure/function relationships.
Our studies have shown that phosphine-supported zwitterions maintaining a borate anion at approximately 4 Å from a coordinated metal center are appreciably more electron-rich than their corresponding cations, but nonetheless mediate a suite of related organometallic reaction transformations.

 MACVSOG Operation TAILWIND
The Archive is posting these excerpts in response to the great interest in the retracted CNN report alleging U.S. military use of nerve gas against U.S. defectors in Laos during the Vietnam war.
In it, the network contended that a secret commando unit, Studies and Observation Group (SOG), used lethal sarin nerve gas and killed U.S. defectors and innocent civilians in Laos during Operation Tailwind in 1970.
A former SOG commando denied he had confirmed the use of sarin to CNN, as did retired Adm. Thomas Moorer, former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman.

Description of Star Formation/ISM Studies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The relative amounts of the various ISM components in the original compressed mass probably bear influence on the end result, but the details of the process could be dependent on the ultimate mass or environment of young star.
A major pursuit of star formation studies is the determining of the details of this process, and its relation to the ISM components, to understand how the wide variety of stars form.
As can be imagined, each approach is not independent; namely, observations test theories, leading to better theories, in turn provoking better observations to test them, etc. Also, astronomers generally combine both approaches to their projects, in varying degrees relative to their interest.
