Fountains Abbey, Studley Royal, National Trust, historic site - The Deer Park
The Deer Park once enclosed Studley Royal House, but this was largely destroyed by fire in December 1716 and was almost entirely rebuilt.
The Deer Park is an important area for nature conservation, with its unimproved grassland and fallen trees providing a vital habitat for many species of invertebrates which, in turn, contribute to a thriving eco-system.
The park was also used during the Second World War - the grassland was turned over to food production and the main avenue was a major assembly point for troops on their way south for the Normandy landings in 1944.

Its design of still water, lawns, temples and sculptures against a dark background of trees is the perfect fusion between a wild landscape and the carefully crafted planning of the 18th century landscape.
