David Hare's "Stuff Happens" is robust political theater -- on the surface, a fascinating, step-by-step account of how the United States and Britain built their case for the current war in Iraq.
NEW YORK --David Hare's "Stuff Happens" is robust political theater -- on the surface, a fascinating, step-by-step account of how the United States and Britain built their case for the current war in Iraq.
Yet the story of "Stuff Happens" has its beginnings in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, which was instrumental in forming the outlooks of Powell, Cheney and Rumsfeld.

Stuff Happens - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stuff Happens is a play by David Hare, written in response to the Iraq War.
The play presents a mix of viewpoints, including arguments for and against the attack on Iraq, mixing verbatim re-creations of real speeches, meetings and press conferences and fictionalised versions of private meetings between members of the Bush and Blair administrations, and international figures such as Hans Blix and Dominique de Villepin.
Stuff Happens opened at the National Theatre in London in September 2004, and has subsequently been performed at Los Angeles' Mark Taper Forum (with Keith Carradine and Julian Sands) in June 2005 and at Sydney's Seymour Center in July 2005.

Stuff shouldn't just happen in a world where people hate unfairness and expect, no, demand that the whole universe operate like a well-oiled machine with an obvious relationship between every cause and effect.
Rather than accept the idea that maybe stuff just happens and go on living in a world in which there is uncertainty and unpredictability, there are those who'd rather believe that all events are the result of a kind of cosmic cause and effect.
And when stuff happens, our task as a people of faith, is to try to figure out that meaning, that purpose, that lesson.

The overarching thrust of "Stuff Happens" is a portrait of an administration -- led by a Bush wilier than most of his critics give him credit for -- that swaggers into a war while seemingly incapable of contemplating the consequences.
"Stuff Happens" casts Rice as the solid sentinel, coolly sticking by the president for better or worse, and Powell as a man of conscience, an anguished fence-straddler caught between duty and the intuition that Bush's path for the country spells calamity.
For all the intrigue and backbiting in "Stuff Happens," the most intense struggle is the one between Powell and himself.

 Stuff Happens - David Hare
Stuff Happens was first performed at the National Theatre in London on 1 September 2004 in a production directed by Nicholas Hytner
In an Author's Note David Hare writes that Stuff Happens "is surely a play, not a documentary", an almost necessary reminder given how many of the lines repeat words spoken by the actual, historical actors, words that ring very familiar.
The main purpose of Stuff Happens is to trace that path to war.

Thus, the funny behind closed doors stuff conjured from Hare's imagined take of the interviews he conducted will be less revelation than relief from the sense of impotent anger this deadly serious "stuff" stirs up.
Stuff Happens offers no plan for a more hopeful scenario but simply lays out the facts with as much dramatic heft as this combination docudrama/history format allows.

In placing "Stuff Happens" in the comparatively small Newman Theater at the Public, and putting the performers in a corridor of stage that runs between the two seating areas, the effect is as if the audience too is participating in this re-creation of recent events.
I don't have to summarize the plot for you, do I? "Stuff Happens" charts the staff meetings (at the White House and at No. 10 Downing Street), closed-door conferences, public addresses, and backdoor diplomacy and betrayals that led to the American-spearheaded invasion of Iraq.
And it feels appropriate to the newly ruminative tone of "Stuff Happens" that we are aware that what we are seeing is not necessarily exactly how it was.

I hold that distorting the LoW in the direction of legitimizing the use of human shields and delegitimizing engaging those who are using human shields runs directly contrary to the law's purpose of preventing unnecessary suffering on the part on non-combatants.

Great 'STUFF HAPPENS' in American Debut at Taper (BroadwayWorld.com)
As Hare’s author’s note clearly states, “Stuff Happens is a history play, which happens to center on very recent history.” The ‘history’ of which he speaks, is the sequence of events that led ultimately to the invasion of Iraq by US and coalition forces in March of 2003.
Stuff Happens — the title coming infamously from Rumsfeld when asked why there was looting occurring in the middle of Baghdad while the US occupied the city - is part theatre of the absurd, part cautionary tale, and part Shakespearean tragedy, and sometimes all three at the same time.
Most powerful, however, is the final viewpoint, at the very end of the play, from an Iraqi man who blames the Iraqi people for their own fate saying, “A country’s leader is it own fault.” Truer words could not have been spoken, regardless of whether your leader is a dictator or an elected official.

Yet when rioters were tearing up the U.S.-controlled city of Baghdad last week, Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld responded by saying, "Stuff happens." Then, echoing statements of other Bush administration apparatchiks, Rumsfeld described the looting of the city as an "untidy" display of freedom.
