Also called raised work, stumpwork is a very dimensional embroidery form, most noted by the stuffed figures and attached pieces of embroidery.
Stumpwork was usually found on boxes, cabinets, mirrors and small bags.
Stump drawing was a form of shaded pencil drawing in which a stump, or small eraser of India rubber, among other possible materials, was used to soften the harsher marks of the pencil to made a shaded, relief effect.

The term Stumpwork is a 19th Century invention that describes raised work and stuffed work.

This is represented by authentic reproductions and newer renditions of traditional designs as seen in publications like that of Barbara and Roy Hirst.
