Sturge Island (67°25′ S 164°44′ E) is one of the three main islands in the uninhabited Balleny Islands group located in the Southern Ocean.
It lies 25 kilometres southeast of Buckle Island and 95 kilometres northeast of Belousov Point on the Antarctic mainland.
The island is roughly a parallelogram in shape, with long east and west coasts and shorter coasts facing northwest and southeast.

The Balleny Islands (66°55′ S 163°45′ E) form a chain of uninhabited, mainly volcanic, islands in the Southern Ocean streching from 66°15' to 67°35'S and 162°30' to 165°00'E. The group forms a chain that extends for about 160 km in a northwest-southeast direction.
Buckle Island and the nearby Sabrina Islet are home to several colonies of Adelie and Chinstrap penguins.
The English whaling captains John Balleny and Thomas Freeman first sighted the group in 1839: Freeman was the first person to land on any of the islands on February 9 1839, and it was the first landing south of the Antarctic Circle.

Located in lower St. Ann, Sturge Town was first established by Joseph Sturge, a Quaker philanthropist who bought the property that was formerly known as Mt. Abylah and divided into village lots for some 100 ex-slaves.
Some of the senior citizens who were born in Sturge Town and are descendants of the original 100 families, say the community is urgently in need of economic injection.

At 1500 hours we sighted Sturge Island which is part of the Balleny group (and is the highest and largest of the group).
These islands consist of three main islands; Sturge, Buckle and Young and numerous smaller islands located about 300 km off the Northern Victoria Land (a strip of the continent) straddling the Antarctic Circle in the northern Ross Sea.
While at Sturge Island, the captain made a run along the west side of the island, close to the island to fill in world knowledge on the soundings.

After being inhabited by the original Carib natives, the island underwent five separate and unique periods of change and turmoil which literally shaped the way the island is today: the early colonial period, the slavery period, the post-Slavery period, the modern period, and the volcanic period.
The island, discovered by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the Americas in 1493, was named like many other islands and locations in the Americas, with religious connotations.
The Sturge effort to encourage lime growing, as by 1878 over 120,000 lime trees were being grown and harvested from on the island, nearly twelve lime trees per human living on the island.
