  Sturgeon Falls, Ontario - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The town of Sturgeon Falls is located in the District of Nipissing of northeastern Ontario and is part of the Municipality of West Nipissing.
It is situated on the Sturgeon River, 3 miles north of Lake Nipissing and 24 miles west of North Bay on Highway 17, part of the Trans-Canada Highway.
It is the oldest community in District of Nipissing — James Holditch of Bracebridge, Ontario, credited as being the non-aboriginal settler in the area, arrived in 1878 and built a cabin along the shore of the Sturgeon River near the falls.

Sturgeon Falls had its beginnings before the arrival of the railway there in 1882.
The area now known as Sturgeon Falls was home base in 1882 when the CP railroad came through and continued westward.
Augustin Daoust got land in Sturgeon Falls in 1896 although the Ontario census of 1891 for Springer Township shows his family and him already living there (this is before Sturgeon Falls was incorporated into a town).

In the beginning of the eighteenth century, the founding of Detroit caused the centre of the western missions to be transferred eastward; those of Georgian Bay were abandoned, being resumed only in 1836, when Rev. Jean Baptiste Proulx, a diocesan priest, settled in Manitoulin Island.
In 1838 another secular priest, the zealous Father Pierz, founded the missions of Grand Portage, Michipicoton, etc. Hardly had the Jesuits returned to the country, when the evangelization of the savages of what is now New Ontario was entrusted to their care.
He was curate at the cathedral of Peterborough until his appointment to the rectory of North Bay (1896), and was consecrated bishop at Peterborough on 24 Feb., 1905.

The blisters on my feel were healing fairly well, but I still took the precaution of putting Band-Aids around 4 of them before we hitched up the trailer and drove into Sturgeon Falls to walk the other 5 kilometers of our Volksmarch.
Along the first leg we stopped off in a Canadian souvenir store for a bit, and I found a small handcrafted kayak that I decided to purchase as a memento, which naturally meant we had to carry it along for the rest of our walk.
Our fist stop was a rather graceful bridge over the Sturgeon River, and from there we had a nice view upstream to the old falls area, now dammed up, and downstream.
