 USS Sturgeon II
Sturgeon stood out of port, on 4 September, to begin her fifth war patrol in an area between Mono Island and the Shortland Islands in the Solomons group.
Sturgeon moved south of Tetipari Island and patrolled there until she returned to Brisbane on the 25th for repairs and refit.
Sturgeon was routed to California for an overhaul and arrived at San Francisco on 15 August.

 Leroy Ingles TMCM(SS) Bio
In June 1941 he transferred to USS STURGEON (SS 187) and made six war patrols on her before transferring to USS PADDLE (SS 263) as a First Class Torpedoman in 1943.
Ingles made Chief in November 1943 and was PADDLE's COB for seven war patrols before transferring to the submarine tender USS ORION (AS 18) in April 1945 as a Warrant Officer.
He returned to the fleet in June 1953 as COB of the USS FLYING FISH (SS 229) before transferring to USS NAUTILUS (SSN 571) as her first COB.

 USN Ships--USS Sturgeon (SS-187)
USS Sturgeon, a 1449-ton Salmon class submarine built at the Mare Island Navy Yard, California, was commissioned in June 1938.
USS Sturgeon was decommissioned in mid-November 1945 and sold for scrapping in June 1948.
USS Sturgeon (SS-187) is immediately beyond Stingray, with the wakes further in the distance probably belonging to USS Seal (SS-183) and USS Salmon (SS-182).

Sturgeon was moored in Mariveles Bay on 7 December 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor She put to sea the next afternoon to patrol an area between the Pescadores Islands and Formosa.
On the evening of the 21st, she sighted a darkened ship believed to be a large cargo carrier.
She was in the yard from 14 January to 11 May for an overhaul.

They were, however, referred to by "Submarine Number" (or, more properly, "Submarine Torpedo Boat Number"), with that number corresponding to the "SS" number formally assigned in July 1920, or which would have been assigned if the "boat" had still been on the Navy list.
With a few exceptions, submarines with these expanded designations were numbered in the original SS series.
Before, during and after World War II, other submarines were given designations that were based on specialized functions within the submarine ("S-") type, but were numbered separately from the SS series and will be treated on other Online Library pages.

USS RASHER (SS 269) when they accomplished the highest tonnage of Japanese ships sunk during a single patrol by a United States Submarine.
CREVALLE was for most of this patrol in company and a part of a three-sub wolf pack with the USS Flasher (SS 249) and the now healthy USS Angler (SS 240).
The STURGEON was the boat that, upon sinking her first ship, her Captain sent the message "STURGEON no longer a virgin." From then on "Virgin Sturgeon" became a frequently used expression by United States Submarine sailors.

The Laboratory was named for Captain Charles N.G. (Monk) Hendix, a 1939 graduate, and an all-American lacrosse player.
Monk graduated from the Submarine School in 1941, and served in S-39, STURGEON (SS-187), CARP (SS-338), and MAPIRO (SS-376), completing 12 war patrols.
After the war, he was Commanding Officer of TIRU (SS-416).
