Sturminster Newton, known to locals as Stur, is a town in the Blackmore Vale area of Dorset, England.
The town is set in the vale Thomas Hardy based his fictional Vale of the little dairies on, and Sturminster had the largest livestock market in Britain, which stood close to the town centre until it was closed and demolished in 1998.
South of the river is the area of Newton, made up of old stone thatched cottages, and Sturminster Newton mill, which was restored in 1980 and is now a museum.

The vale is Thomas Hardy's "Vale of the little dairies", and books including Tess of the D'urbervilles were set here; he also lived and wrote in Sturminster Newton for a time.
Land use in the vale is predominantly dairy farming, with many small farms dotted accros the vale.

Sturminster, Newton Castle, a market town and parish in the hundred of Sturminster, Newton Castle, Sherborne division, 8 miles from Shaftesbury, and 108 from London, contained in 1831, 1831 inhabitants, and was assessed in 1815, to £3,406.
It is situated on the river Stour, part on the right and part on the left bank, connected by a good stone bridge, and consists of old low-built houses, with the exception of a few in the central part of the town.
Its ground plan is the form of the letter D. The remains consist of a small artificial mount or keep, within a vallum, and deep ditch, seated on a hill, on the Newton side of the river.

This place, which derives its name from the river on the northern bank of which it stands, and the minster, or church, is supposed to be the Anicetis of Ravennas, and was early known to the Saxons; some lands here having been given by Alfred to his son Ethelwald.
In 968, Edgar gave the manor of Sturre, or Stour, to the abbey of Glastonbury, and the grant was confirmed by Edmund Ironside; and in the Norman survey it was included in Newenton, or Newton.
Sturminster-Newton is formed by the two townships of Sturminster and Newton, occupying different sides of the river Stour, and connected by a causeway and bridge of six arches; the latter has been lately widened and improved, and the formed raised, so as to prevent the inundation to which it was previously subject.
