These species are relatively large (the Gracula species include the largest of the Sturnidae), have strong legs and large beaks, and wattles on the side of the head.
Cinnyrichus is one of the few Sturnidae genera in which the male and female have different plumage.
Unlike most Sturnidae, whose diet is made up of fruit and insects, the Royal Starling lives almost entirely on insects, some of which (in the wild) are caught in the air.

The Sturnidae family is divided into two subfamilies.
