Today the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra is one of the state’s most important musical ambassadors, giving about 80 concerts a year in Stuttgart, in the area covered by SWR broadcasts, and in musical centres in Germany and abroad.
The enthusiasm with which the "Stuttgart Sound" is received by audiences can be experienced not only at the regular concerts given by the RSO in the Liederhalle in Stuttgart but also at the numerous guest appearances it makes in the area covered by SWR broadcasts as well as on concert tours throughout Germany and abroad.
In summer 2002, Sir Roger Norrington and the RSO performed the cycle of all nine symphonies by Beethoven at the "European Music Festival Stuttgart" in the context of concerts with accompanying lectures and as part of a master class for conductors.

 Biography of
Among the high points in the history of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra are the concerts conducted by Sergiu Celibidache.
His performances of the former's Symphony of Psalms had an archaic austerity to them, while the ballet The Fairy's Kiss was of enchanting lightness and airiness.
However stubborn and difficult Celibidache may have been as a result of his spontaneity, directness and ebullience and however much he may have wanted to be the constant centre of attention, he was no star conductor in the modern sense of the term but a performing artist in the service of his art.

One of the most prominent orhestras in Germany, the SWR Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, welcomes Georges Pretre at its podium, the high acclaimed conductor of international fame.
The orchestra's repertoire ranges from the classic-romantic orchestras repertoire of the 18th and 19th century to classic modern to contemporary music.
Unusual for a radio orchestra is the inclusion of opera as part of the "Schwetzinger Festspiele" (Schwetzingen Festival) and the maintenance of ancient music with authentic performance practice.

INKPOT#90 CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: R.STRAUSS Don Juan. Tod und Verklärung. Ein Heldenleben. RESPIGHI Pini di Roma. SWR ...
Unlike the two previous issues, of Brahms symphonies and Russian showpieces, this set offers evidence of Daniel Barenboim's description of Celibidache as "part magician and part gypsy" in ample measure.
Celibidache is almost a full ten minutes longer than Fritz Reiner on his famous Chicago Symphony Orchestra recording (1954, RCA 09026 61494-2) and the only other recording to approach Celibidache's 50+ minutes is Barbirolli's LSO account on EMI (CZS5 69349-2).
The Celibidache performance shares a great deal with Barbirolli's version: a sumptuous sound from the orchestra highlights the opulence of Strauss' writing, there is greater tension and electricity in the battle scene, and the acerbic wind writing is more keenly articulated.

Indeed, listening to these performances given with Carl Schuricht for Stuttgart radio in 1952 and 1956 it is difficult to imagine a finer Mozartian.
Ad lib flourishes are delightfully ebullient and if there is a sudden slip of the finger at her first entry in K459 that is, perhaps, reassuring evidence that even she, with her matchless dexterity, could momentarily lose her concentration.
Schuricht and the Stuttgart Radio orchestra are totally in sympathy with their inimitable soloist and the recordings have come up remarkably well.

This is the sixteenth volume to emerge from the vaults of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra featuring the conductor Carl Schuricht, well-known by collectors but eclipsed, largely due to the scarcity of his studio recordings, by his contemporaries.
The Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra plays no worse than other orchestras of the period and sometimes better, but they yield noticeably to later recordings in terms of technical excellence.
Siegfried Idyll’s exposed orchestration shows this up most clearly – the strings don’t have the sheen nor the brass the clarity of articulation of later orchestras (nor, it must be admitted, the accuracy), but the woodwinds fare very well indeed in their obbligato parts.

Following Germany's defeat, the unknown music student was catapulted to the helm of the second finest orchestra in Europe; he had just won a contest to lead a radio ensemble when the temporary conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic was killed and Celibidache was promoted to its helm.
He remained with the orchestra even after its permanent conductor, the legendary Wilhelm Furtwangler, was finally absolved of collaboration in 1947 and resumed his career.

ArkivMusic | Villa-lobos: Symphony No 7, Etc / St. Clair, Stuttgart Radio
It's a mystery to me why anyone would claim that Villa-Lobos was not a natural-born symphony composer, not just because he wrote 12 of them, but also because they sound just like everything else he wrote--busy, exotic, and wholly characteristic of his inimitable style.
Symphony No. 7 begins like one of his Amazonian tone poems, with "bird call" glissandos, glittering percussion, celesta, harp, and piano, and loony string writing that has to be heard to be believed.
The ensuing lento must be accounted one of the most beautiful slow movements in all of the symphonies, attractive of melody and gorgeously scored.

Symphony No. 7 (1942) draws on themes from Atterberg's 1932 opera Fanal, which was based on a 16th-century subject.
(Not surprisingly, Sibelius admired this work.) The symphony exudes an atmosphere of rustic joy in the first movement, and follows with a beautiful, brilliantly elaborated tune in the second, a bright and lively scherzo, and a swirling, folk dance finale.
As we've come to expect, Ari Rasilainen and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony give stunning performances, producing a wonderfully robust sound, fully fleshing out Atterberg's richly colored orchestrations.

The Fifth Symphony is a wartime work, composed in 1944, and, according to Prokofiev, was to "sing of man, free and happy, of his strength, generosity and the purity of his soul".
The agony of Romeo's horror as he stands at Juliet's tomb, at once conveyed by a sparse string melody of unusual despondency, makes way for the shattering climax (and for once it really is that, drenched in tragedy) that announces the most passionate music Prokofiev ever wrote.
