Styal is part of the Quarry Bank Mill Estate owned by National Trust and is located close to Wilmslow in Cheshire.
The Styal Estate including the Mill, Apprentice House and Styal Village is a great place for a visit; a complete example of an early factory complex it gives a taste of what life must have been like during the industrial revolution.
The Styal Estate including Quarry Bank Mill was donated to the National Trust in 1939 by Alexander Carlton Greg, although it continued to operate as a working mill until 1959; it was first opened as a museum in 1978.

A methadone programme was introduced at Styal Prison at Wilmslow, Cheshire, after six inmates in a year killed themselves within their first month of custody - five of whom had a serious drug habit.
Styal is the second-biggest women's jail in England and Wales, with 460 inmates.
There had been some improvements at the prison since the team's last visit in 2002, when inspectors were concerned to discover newly-arrived addicts were vomiting and having fits in their cells due to the lack of a proper detox programme, the report said.

UK: An inquest jury returned a verdict itemising a catalogue of faults at Styal prison in Cheshire, concluding that the prison's "failure of duty of care" contributed to the death of Sarah Campbell, 18, who took an overdose of tablets on the first day of her three-year sentence.
When she arrived at Styal in January 2003 Campbell asked to be sent to Butler House, a unit for vulnerable prisoners, but she was put in the segregation unit.
The prisons ombudsman, Stephen Shaw, brought in to investigate after a sixth woman died in Styal in August 2003, told the inquest he was deeply uncomfortable that women had been placed in the segregation unit at Styal if they were at risk of self-harm or suicide.

Styal Cottage Homes were built by the Chorlton Board of Guardians, one of many charitable organisations that ran what were called workhouses.
There was a continuing need to send more children to Styal and so a further three cottages were added in 1903, taking the population up to 450; and additional cottages were built over the next few years.

I welcome the publication today of the Prison and Probation Ombudsman's (PPO) report into the death at Styal of Julie Walsh in 2003 and wish to make a statement about developments since 2003 and further planned work relating to women offenders.
Paul Goggins made a statement in which he outlined the main general findings of the Ombudsman's report and the action the Prison Service was taking as a matter of urgency to prevent a recurrence.
The Ombudsman's detailed and thorough report identified some serious inadequacies at Styal relating to regimes, facilities and procedures during the period covered by the six deaths.

From 1983 Young Offenders were admitted and in 1999 a wing was added to accommodate unsentenced female prisoners following the closure of Risley's remand centre, increasing the prison size by 60%.

There are facilities for mothers with babies up to age 18 months.

ALAN Bullock achieved his target of a full set of four aces at his home club Styal nearly five years ago, and now he has another up his sleeve after a hole-inone on the 220-yard par three 15th during a Texas Scramble competition.
Alan, a nine handicapper, was a founder member of the club in 1994 and its first captain in 2000, by which time he had achieved the distinction of holing all four of their par three holes in one.
But during his captain's year Styal remodelled their course taking out the old 16th and replacing it with a monster 250-yard hole, now the 15th.
