 The dadaIMC codebase: Stylesheets
In addition, module-specific stylesheets are loaded as needed, or as specified in the module's preferences.
Stylesheets titled "Default," or whose filename is "default.css" cannot be edited (to ensure that you always can fall back on a working stylesheet).
Modules will always attempt to load a module-specific stylesheet with the same name as the current site stylesheet, and will fall back to using their own "default.css" if no other is present.

Stylesheets: Single or Multiple? » Whitespace   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
I have yet to use the multiple stylesheet tactic, but there has been more than one occassion where I have thought about how useful it would be.
Multiple stylesheets could possibly help in fighting redundancy in my files, which is a problem that I sometimes have.
Another reason for using more than one stylesheet is one that I encountered in my last job: we had a corporate-wide stylesheet, but our individual web apps sometimes needed other styles for unique functionality.

 Stylesheets
Stylesheets allow us to manage documents in a way that separates formatting from content.
Alternative stylesheets can be called to render documents for specific physical needs or platforms.
Because stylesheets strip away formatting from content, they support the accurate transfer of content from one platform to another.

Cascading Style Sheets - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computing, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a stylesheet language used to describe the presentation of a document written in a markup language.
Its most common application is to style web pages written in HTML and XHTML, but the language can be applied to any application of XML, including SVG and XUL.
Prior to CSS, nearly all of the presentational attributes of an HTML document were contained within the HTML code; all font colors, background styles, element alignments, borders and sizes had to be explicitly described, often repeatedly, in the midst of the HTML code.

 Graphical Stylesheets
Traditional stylesheets encode information about the appearance of text and the layout of content, thus enabling the separation of structure from presentation in the case of text-centric publications.
With text stylesheets, the same look can be applied to different documents by applying the same stylesheet.
Now that you have been exposed to a random sampling of Graphical Stylesheet examples, you might be wondering how widely they apply and what their compelling use-cases might be.

NPS stylesheets   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Stylesheets are used to format and display raw XML files into different views.
For those with the technical expertise, these stylesheets can be modified to expose additional elements or to change the text formatting.
Note that these NPS stylesheets were written in the 1.0 version of XSL while the ESRI stylesheets were written in an earlier working draft of XSL.

The Design of the DocBook XSL Stylesheets   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
One of the key factors is stylesheet modularity: how easy is it to identify and isolate the parts that have to be changed and change them without breaking everything that used to work.
Whenever you write a constant value into your stylesheet (the background color of a table cell, the name of an output file, the enumeration style of a list), consider carefully whether or not it's going to be useful in the future to change that constant.
The DocBook XSL Stylesheets were designed from the beginning with the goal of writing both HTML and Formatting Object Stylesheets from the beginning.

CSS: Stylesheets Tutorial - Part 1   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Cascading stylesheets enable us to get more control the right way: by separating the part that defines structure from the part that defines form.
The whole point of stylesheets is to separate form and structure.
Internet Explorer 3.0 was the first browser to try to support stylesheets, and its attempt was valiant, particularly because at that point the official specification had yet to be solidified.

 CSS - Stylesheets explained.
You can use a browser-detection script in the header of your pages which will link to a different stylesheet depending on which browser is being used.
It is now easy to change the background image or color of your site by simply changing the variables in the stylesheet.
With simple stylesheets you should have no problem and they will really help to make sure your site keeps a certain amount of uniformity and cohesion.

Stylesheets Generated When Saving a FrameMaker 5.5.x Document as HTML - Support Knowledgebase   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Stylesheets contain formatting information from the paragraph and character formats in your FrameMaker document; they do not contain formatting information from layout overrides.
To name classes in the stylesheet, FrameMaker 5.5.x uses the names of the paragraph and character formats in the document.
For HTML files to appear with formatting (beyond the limitations noted above), their stylesheets must be in the same folder as the HTML file, and the browser must support stylesheets.

Skinning Gmail with a Custom Stylesheet [persistent.info]
To this effect, I have made a stylesheet that is designed to override the appearance of Gmail, not necessarily because I think my take on the UI is that much better, but because I wanted to show that it could be done.
The stylesheet itself is nothing special, just a basic makeover with a different color scheme.
Writing the actual stylesheet was somewhat tedious since the code is somewhat convoluted, unlike the academic-like cleanness of the CSS Zen Garden markup.

 Cantoni.org Articles: Print Stylesheets
This has the benefit of not adding a second stylesheet and modern browsers have good support for the @media attribute, but older browsers may ignore the @media group specifier and may use the definitions for screen_ media as well as for print.
The downside is that you’ll have a second stylesheet file, but the bandwidth hit should be minimal.
Adding print stylesheets to my site is a nice touch, but what I really want is print stylesheets on everyone else’s sites.

Also in principle, stylesheets provide for increased accessibility, though the actual accessibility provisions of CSS are so poorly supported that the entire project amounts to vapourware.
There is some evidence that CSS media types created for accessibility were not all that well-considered by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), a concern that is quite separate from implementation issues subsequent to their introduction.
Just as user stylesheets can be applied post-facto to alter an author’s stylesheet (or act alone if the author didn’t specify one), under Emacspeak it is possible to write user aural stylesheets that modify the rendering on the visitor’s computer of prewritten, prestyled documents without the original author’s knowledge.

 XML.com: Utility Stylesheets
I have several useful little stylesheets that I've never mentioned in this column because each is so short that describing it would make for a pretty short column.
Combining that stylesheet with this one would make it even easier, because assigning an identifier to every node of a document makes it easier to track if you split up and rejoin the document.
And, if you have any short general-purpose stylesheets like these that you're interested in sharing with XML.com readers, let me know; maybe this can be a three-part series.

Stylesheets are templates that tell the portal how to display the data for a page.

Cascading Stylesheets (CSS)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Stylesheets will offer Web designers the ability to apply "styles" or "formatting tags" to HTML pages very much the same as desktop publishing programs do now.
Like their desktop-publishing cousins, cascading stylesheets allow Web publishers to streamline design by applying font, color, weights, sizes, and margin choices to several pages at once--a huge savings in coding time.
Stylesheets, when combined with Dynamic HTML (DHTML), allow designers to layer words and graphics, while simultaneously reducing download time.
