Su (computing) - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
su is commonly run from the command line terminal.
When run, su asks for the target user's password, and, if accepted, grants the user access to that account.
GNU su, however, does not support a wheel group; this was done for philosophical reasons.

Wheel war - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In many Unix systems, the su command could be used to gain superuser access to a machine.
GNU su does not support "wheel", primarily for such philosophical reasons.
The term "wheel" originated with early mainframe and minicomputer systems used in the 1960s and 1970s and indicated a level of trust greater than that of a system operator.

Science Fair Projects - Root (computing)
In Unix-style computer operating systems, root is the conventional name of the user who has all rights or permissions in all modes (single- or multi-user).
Generally, it is not good practice for anyone to use root as their normal user account, because simple typographical errors can cause major damage to the system.
It is recommended to create a normal user account instead and then use the su command to switch when necessary.

To restore the computer to functionality, is often necessary to erase the system, and reinstall the basic supported applications that were purchased for the system (or updated versions if applicable).
When replacement computers are purchased for use in The College, the old computer is in most cases returned to the Computing Services Group for reallocation or disposal.

Trustworthy Computing is computing that is as available, reliable and secure as electricity, water services and telephony.
Computing falls well short of this, ranging from the individual user who isn't willing to add a new application because it might destabilize their system, to a corporation that moves slowly to embrace e-business because today's platforms don't make the grade.

The Trinity computing officers are rather inexplicably concerned about people using this freely available resource (Trinity's 100MBit link to the University Data Network is utilised at about 10% of capacity) and may impose limits over the Summer 2003.
