Subsaharan Africa Study Guide   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Subsaharan Africa is a region of great physical beauty and mystery, but also of great social misery.
As noted above, Subsaharan Africa is one of the poorest Realms on Earth and has the most depressing social statistics: Infant Mortality is highest in the world (almost 1 in 10 babies does not live to see their first birthday) and Life Expectancy is only 50 years.
Welcome to reality in Subsaharan Africa, where many of the old colonial country boundaries may eventually be realigned, including those of the illogically-grouped Congo.

Local Entrepreneurship in Southeast Asia and Subsaharan Africa:
Many who wish to compare Southeast Asia and Subsaharan Africa point to the structural similarities between the two regions: similar commodity export histories, similar GNP/per capita in the 1960s, etc. Yet the differences between the two regions are significant, and particularly so in their experience of entrepreneurial development.
In Subsaharan Africa, Portuguese efforts to capture the gold and ivory trade greatly reduced the activities of the Arabs who had traded along the east coast and also kept local groups from taking their place.
In contrast, the initial development of manufacturing in Subsaharan Africa lagged Southeast Asia's by some 30 to 40 years, and no region of the continent is anywhere near being well-integrated.

 New African Cinema: Cineaste
One of subSaharan Africa's newest forms of art - and probably the least known in the Western world - is cinema, which, nevertheless, has been in existence there for more than thirty-five years.
From its beginnings, subSaharan African cinema has been largely envisioned by its creators as a serious and functional art form, presenting realistic images of Africa from an African viewpoint.
One of the merits of this series of four videos is that it adequately reflects the often ignored diversity subSaharan African cinema has acquired over the years.

Whereas in the 1980s the Subsahara was overwhelmed by drought, devaluation, and debt, the 1990s have brought the paradox of civil strife and a complex transition to democracy.
This volume surveys the major political, economic, social, ecological, and gender related aspects of Subsaharan Africa's struggle toward democracy.
Its essays pose two fundamental sets of ideas: that the internal equilibrium can be restored only through institutional changes with these countries; and that the political and economic dilemmas in the region are closely related to issues of gender and the environment.

H-Net Review: Andrew F. Clark on France's Relationship with Subsaharan Africa
France's main concern, according to the author, remains the maintenance of an image of international stature and influence, particularly in Subsaharan Africa.
It provides a rather pedestrian, dry, chronological, narrative account based on select secondary accounts, failing to break significant new ground or to offer any original insights.
The author has attempted a broad overview of a large, much analyzed and important topic, but unfortunately he has fallen considerably short of making a significant or original contribution.
