  TechnoFILE Drives the Subaru Baja
Subaru has the courage to march to its own drum, and you can’t fault a company for showing gumption.
The Baja was almost as big a crowd pleaser as the Hummer H2 “brute ute” and more so than the Honda Insight hybrid I had driven earlier, both of which are also rather unique.
Okay, the Subaru Baja is unlikely to win a beauty contest, though beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it does what it’s designed to do very well, and that’s what the bottom line should always be about.

 PickupTruck.com - 2003 Subaru Baja: First Drive
The Baja is based on the same platform as Subaru's Legacy/Outback -- a car platform rather than a truck chassis, rendering it as more of a sport sedan with an open pickup bed than as a traditional SUV.
Baja is unique in that it has no direct competitors and fills a specialized niche, with a sporty, playful look about it that should appeal to non-truck folks, while providing truck-like versatility and functionality.
Baja will be offered in two fully equipped configurations: a five-speed manual transmission model, or a four-speed electronic automatic transmission version.

Described by Subaru as "a new type of crossover vehicle that blends the versatility of a compact four-door pickup with the driving dynamics and comfort of a passenger car," the Baja is the Brat reincarnated but with more thought-out practicality and versatility.
The Baja is based on the Legacy platform, and shares its 104.3-inch wheelbase with the Legacy Outback wagon.
The Baja, thanks to its size, is more user friendly than the Avalanche, since average height people can actually reach inside the bed instead of needing a stepladder to do any cargo loading/unloading.

The key to the Subaru Baja models' versatility is the Subaru-designed Switchback(R) system that provides the ability to reconfigure the rear seating area, as well as the cargo bed, to meet a variety of needs when transporting people and cargo.

CanadianDriver: Test Drive - 2003 Subaru Baja
In the tradition of the Subaru Brat, Chevrolet El Camino, Ford Ranchero, Dodge Omni, and VW Rabbit, the new Subaru Baja is a cross between a car and a pickup truck.
Bajas with the four-speed automatic transmission feature a different system: an electronically managed, continuously variable transfer clutch which sends 60% of the power to the front wheels and 40% to the rear, sometimes rising to 50/50 in slippery conditions.
Subaru says the Baja is capable of towing trailers up to 1088 kg (2400 lb.), but with its limited power, I would expect performance and acceleration to be mediocre with a trailer in tow.

Although the Baja is not an off-road vehicle, there was an opportunity to run it through an off-road slalom, where it performed with the same composure experienced on the highway.
The Subaru Baja may work for enough people to make it success, but a full road test will more effectively determine whether this compromise between a wagon and a truck is a winner or an automotive footnote.

Subaru thoughtfully engineered the Switchback cargo bed door into the rear of the Baja’s cab, giving it the quick, easy-to-use convertibility of a Swiss Army Knife.

2003 Subaru Baja - The Car Connection
Then there is the Outback Subaru, which sells sedans, station wagons and the Forester small SUV to suburbanites who don't need true off-road ability but like the look and crave the all-weather security of all-wheel drive.
The Baja definitely belongs to that second aspect of Subaru's schizoid personality; it yells off-roader in its decoration while offering a new riff on the ancient car-as-truck formula (see everything from Model T pickups to the El Camino).
One suspects that a reason Subaru keeps the rear window in place is to maintain the stiffness of the unibody structure which is something Chevrolet doesn't have to worry about on the full-frame Avalanche.

The Baja has limited appeal, but for those who need about half the open-bed cargo utility of a truck as well as a vehicle that rides like a car, the Baja will suit them just fine.

The Baja Turbo also gets new six-spoke 16-inch wheels and P215/60R-16 tires, but the suspension (struts in front, a multi-link system in the back) has been raised slightly to give the vehicle a more off-roadish looking.
The Baja's cockpit is nicely laid out and beautifully made and the ride is well controlled, but it's still tough to figure out much to do with the tiny 41.5-inch bed, even if it can be extended into the cockpit through "Switchback" rear bulkhead and out across the open tail gate thanks to an extender.
The least expensive Baja Turbo should be a couple more thousand than that, and it will be the Baja to have if one's going to have a Baja (it goes on sale in the fall).
