Subaru Forester   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The new 2003 Forester 2.5 XS from Subaru is a well rounded vehicle, both literally and figuratively.
Neither a Station Wagon nor a Sport Utility Vehicle, the Forester brings together the best of both of these vehicle styles — a practical vehicle that is equally at home in suburbia and on roads less travelled.
The Forester was outfitted with 215/60R16 Geolanda G900s from Yokohama mounted on 16" rims.

 Subaru Forester Survey Summary
Subaru would not be disappointed because so far he has been very pleased with his vehicle.
With the negatives out of the way NC notes that his Subaru handles exceptionally well and the ride "continues to impress [him] every time [he] encounters a rough patch in the road." NC is also pleased with his Subaru's acceleration.
However, he does note that the Forester has "good (not great) carrying capacity." He recently took his Forester to the Outer Banks without a hitch, but he does note that although Subaru has raised the clearance of the Forester, compared to a sedan, an off-reader should still be careful.

2006 Subaru Forester - The Car Connection
Subaru is very comfortably selling a car designed for the existing buyer base, not trying for an entirely different one, which is so often the case.
The Forester's handling is still tuned toward plenty of understeer; and the Yokohama Geolander tires (standard on all models) were very vocal in front when approaching the limits of adhesion.
The Forester is a vehicle that's fun to drive on a dry road yet practical year-round, with the traction and capability to blast through snow in the winter.

The Forester is available with two engine choices, either a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four generating 173 horsepower or a spirited turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four pumping out an invigorating 230 horsepower and 235 foot pounds of torque (good chance it's more than you have right now unless you wield an S4 or M3).
The Forester handles better than could be expected of a small SUV and for what it is, the Forester does what it does very well.
Subaru's "symmetrical all-wheel drive," where the normal front-to-rear split is 50/50, operates in utter anonymity.

 Subaru Forester
Despite the 4-wheel drive and raised ride-height, Subaru emphasise on the road going attributes of their 50/50 drive system, which redistributes torque to the grippy wheels when wheel spin is detected.
The Subaru, like many others, is never intended to go into serious off-roading; climbing a few kerbs or traversing a bumpy back lane is as much as most owners will ever stretch to (something a 2CV would manage as well as most 4X4s).
In reality, the Forester will negotiate the farmers field on the camping holiday, the speed bumps on your local back street and the arduous trek across across the local supermarket car park at least as well and any Shogun, Range Rover et al.

While Subarus aren't nearly as popular in the southwest as they are in the northeast, the company's all-wheel drive technology (standard equipment in all Subarus) sure does come in handy in the wet weather and I am surprised that more desert residents haven't figured this out.
As is the case with all its models, Subaru's Forester has two types of all-wheel-drive systems; both provide power to all four wheels under all driving conditions.

Subaru's Forester small SUV has so much going for it: excellent all-wheel-drive system, good crash-test scores, a "top pick" rating from influential Consumer Reports magazine because of good road manners, top scores for reliability and owner satisfaction, and slower-than-average depreciation.
And even though Subaru says some upgrades underneath were to improve the ride and handling response, the steering on the non-turbo model tested for a week felt a little over-boosted.

Subaru Technica International didn't stop at the new look and more powerful powertrain; the chassis has come in for a good once-over, and with new inverted type strut suspension, not to mention a 30mm lower ride height, the Forester STi limits body roll, squat and dive during hard driving.
The Subaru Forester STi's interior has also come in for a few sporty improvements, the biggest change of which is a pair of Recaro bucket seats for the driver and front passenger (complete with trendy STi embroidery).
