SUBBAYYA SIVASANKARANARAYANA Pillai (1901- 1950), a brilliant mathematician known for his remarkable work in Number Theory, was born on April 5,1901, at Vallam near Courtallam town in Tamilnadu.
Pillai had extended some of Ramanujan's work on highly composite numbers, already in 1933 but got it published in 1944,only after similar results due to ErdOs and Alaoglu came to be known.
Pillai's mathematical achievements seem to have peaked during his stay with Annamalai University and it was also then that he got his D.Sc degree from Madras University the first such for Mathematics there from.

Sivasankaranarayana Pillai in the 36th Annual session of the Indian Science Congress on 3rd January, 1949 at Allahabad university.
S. Sivasankaranarayana Pillai (as S. Pillai - known to Mathematical community) was born at Vallam near the famous Water falls town namely Courtallam which is situated in Tirunelveli district, Tamilnadu.
When S. Pillai was five years old, a master was arranged to teach Pillai at his house.

Pillai is also spelt Pillay and pronounced the same (though in Maharashtra in India the surname "Pillay" is a caste of untouchables similar to the pulaya's of Kerala).
Change to this name had to be made when Pillai's emigrated and some countries would not accept the last name due to obscure regulations.
