It was in the autumn of 1944 that the Soviet Army invaded Subcarpathia.

The Carpathian Slav peoples (1) were conquered by the Hungarians in the 11th century and fully integrated into their kingdom, never enjoying any kind of autonomy or never forming a separate administrative unit.
(4) The union was based on the agreement (granting Subcarpathia autonomy within the future Czechoslovak State) concluded in 1918 between the leaders of the Rusyn diaspora and the Czechoslovak leaders in exile.
The new situation was formalized by the Treaties of Saint-Germain- en-Laye with Austria (1919) and of Trianon with Hungary (1920) As to the Romanians, they terminated the Hutsul Republic in jun 1919 and remained in the region until jul 1920.

The southern part of Subcarpathia and the southern part of Slovakia which had ethnic Hungarian majority were annexed to Hungary by the First Vienna Treaty in 1938.
On March 15 1939 Hungary annexed the full territory of Subcarpathia to the Polish border and a 5-10 km wide stripe of East-Slovakia (for example Ublianka valley and Stakèín - Takcsány village).
Only the northern and central part of the region called now Subcarpathia was annexed by military force (the southern part was also annexed, but not with military force, but peacely).

For your information, Subcarpathia was twice granted autonomy in the XX century and, for several years, it had an independent status within USSR.
People of Subcarpathia is the only one in Ukraine who had some experience with democracy and the rule of law in the first Czechoslovak Republic.
If Subcarpathia has autonomy, is it possible to address the problem of infrastructure far better than in the current conditions.

The first wave of Ukrainian immigration began in the 1880s and lasted until World War I.
It originated among impoverished peasants in eastern Galicia and Subcarpathia, regions of the Austro-Hungarian Empire which had been governed previously by Poland and Hungary but came under Austrian rule by the late eighteenth century.
However, many second-wave immigrants were educated and had participated in the Ukrainian independence movement that emerged after the Austro-Hungarian and Russian empires collapsed.
