Injection (medicine) -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-02)
There are generally three types of injections - (An injection under the skin) subcutaneous injections, (An injection into a muscle) intramuscular injections, and (additional info and facts about intravenous infusion) intravenous infusions.
However, people should try to use the same body area for injections that are given at the same time each day-for example, always using the (An enlarged and muscular saclike organ of the alimentary canal; the principal organ of digestion) stomach for the morning injection or an arm for the evening injection.
Using the same body area for these routine injections lessens the possibility of changes in the timing and action of insulin.

Subcutaneous injections (sub-q) involve the use of a short needle such as those used by diabetics for the injection of insulin.
With subcutaneous injection of chemo treatment, the needle goes into the space between the skin and muscle but does not enter as far the muscle layer.
They are tunneled through the subcutaneous tissue (the layer of tissue between the skin and muscle) and inserted into the superior vena cava vessel at entrance of the right atrium of the heart.

Subcutaneous injection is the method used to administer drugs when a small amount of fluid is to be injected, the patient is unable to take the drug orally, or the drug is destroyed by intestinal secretions.
Subcutaneous injections are usually given in the abdomen, upper arm, or the upper leg.
A small piece of skin and subcutaneous tissue is pinched between the thumb and forefinger, and the needle inserted quickly at a 45-degree angle.

Fertinex Improves Quality of Patient Care By Reducing Stress
Subcutaneous injection uses a very small needle and can be easily self-administered with little discomfort.
In addition, even though 70% of patients reported they are more fearful of self- administering an intramuscular injection than being injected by their partner, 57% of patients said their partners were not always available to administer all the necessary injections, causing 43% of patients to self-administer their injections.
The clear majority of survey respondents, 97% of medical professionals and 75% of patients and their partners, believe that subcutaneous injections would be beneficial to patients undergoing infertility therapy.

Subcutaneous Injection of Mercury: "Warding Off Evil"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-02)
Deliberate injection of mercury, especially subcutaneous injection, is rare but is seen in psychiatric patients, individuals who attempt suicide, those who are accidentally injected, and boxers who wish to build muscle bulk.
Injection of elemental mercury is uncommon, and only 72 cases have been reported in the literature over the past 75 years.
The reason for their injections was to ward off "evil" and also to protect against exposure to any unknown diseases while traveling in a foreign country.

Injections are commonly given into the muscle (intramuscularly, or IM), under the skin (subcutaneously, or SC) or into the bloodstream (intravenously, or IV).
Injection records are essential to avoid unnecessary repeat treatments that increase costs, increase the possibility of injection lesions and increase the risk of tissue residues.
Subcutaneous injections should be given at the base of a "tented" fold of loose skin lifted away from the animal with your free hand.

The functional activity of the ECL cells in the rat stomach is reflected in the oxyntic mucosal HDC activity (Håkanson et al., 1992; 1993; 1994; Chen et al., 1994), which therefore was chosen as the parameter to be studied.
YF476 and YM022, deposited subcutaneously as a single bolus injection, lowered the oxyntic mucosal HDC activity (Figure 1A) and raised the serum gastrin concentration (Figure 1B) in a dose-dependent manner (measured 24 h after dosage) (freely fed rats).

Subcutaneous Administration (Hypodermoclysis). Small Animal Diagnostic and Treatment Techniques
Subcutaneous injections can be given anywhere over the dorsal cervical, thoracic or lumbar regions.
To enter the subcutaneous space, pick up a fold of skin and insert the needle under the skin, parallel to the long axis of the skin fold.
If the needle is inserted across the fold of skin, the needle may penetrate both folds of skin and the injection will be deposited on the haircoat (or sprayed at the person holding the animal).

 UpToDate Patient information: Insulin treatment
Injection usually entails pinching a fold of skin between two fingers, inserting a needle attached to an insulin-filled syringe, and depressing the syringe's plunger to express the insulin.
This may vary with the amount of subcutaneous fat present; the greater the amount of subcutaneous fat, the more slowly insulin is absorbed (show figure 1).
Injection into the thigh or buttock may be best for the evening dose because the insulin will be absorbed gradually during the night.

The equilibration curve of deuterium oxide following the subcutaneous injection of 50 grams into the lateral thigh of a normal subject is shown in Figure 1.
The belief that this represented an actual transfer of water rather than an exchange of water by diffusion is based on the disappearance of the mass and the resultant disappearance of the discomfort in the thigh.
Similarly, equilibration time following subcutaneous injection was prolonged in Patient No. 2 and this route of administration has many disadvantages in the management of casualties with gastrointestinal injuries.
