Sweden itself may be considered in four main physical divisions - the mountains and highland district, covering all Norrland and the western part of Svealand; the lowlands of central Sweden; the so-called Sma.land highlands, in the south and southeast; and the plains of Ska.ne, occupying the extreme southward projection of the peninsula.
The population of Sweden in 1900 was 5,136,441.
In Sweden, however, both the Vestgotar and the Upland Sviar were discontented, the former on account of the breaking of the king's promise to Olaf of Norway and the latter on account of the introduction of the new religion, and their passions were further inflamed by the lawman Anund of Skara.

In membership negotiations in 1993-94, Sweden had also reserved the right to make the final decision on whether to join the third stage of the EMU (a common currency and central bank) "in light of continued developments." In a nationwide referendum in November 1994, 52.3% of participants voted for EU membership.
Sweden became a member, in part due to its increasing isolation outside the economic framework of the Maastricht treaty.

This is the old subdivision of Sweden, dating back to the Middle Ages, when they actually (with a modern term) could be seen as federal states in a united kingdom which was Sweden.
The counties are the subdivision of the state, which have led to that the county arms can be crowned with a royal crown when they represent the county board (länsstyrelsen), the highest body of the county, which is led by a landshövding ("land chief" or governor) appointed by the government.
In Sweden, a region has de facto come to be the same thing as a landsting but with some more questions to decide about, which have before been decided by the county.

Firstly, Finland and Sweden formed a single kingdom until 1809, when Finland was conquered by Russia and taken into the Russian Empire as an autonomous Grand Duchy, leaving a substantial Swedish-speaking population in Finland in the coastal areas of Southern, South-Western (including the Åland Islands), and Western Finland.
Although Sweden was not a party to the 1856 treaty establishing the Åland Islands as a demilitarized area, the matter was laid before the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 in order to make it possible to follow a similar path as Denmark had followed with regard to Schleswig.
When the matter was dealt with by the League of Nations, Sweden requested in her submission to the Council of the League that the matter be decided by the inhabitants of the Åland Islands in a plebiscite.
