Subdomain Configuration - How To Setup A Sub Domain - WebsiteGear
A new hostname (A) record is used if the subdomain points to a different web server, or to the same web server listening on a different IP address (as in the case of load distribution).
Note that an alias for www is setup as a subdomain by default by most hosting companies, so that requests to www.domain.com is sent to the same website that handles the requests for domain.com.
Subdomain configuration starts with an entry in the DNS server of the parent domain and the lookup resolves the subdomain to an IP address of the web server.

While there is no solid limit to how long a subdomain can be, the entire host name including the subdomain and the domain can only be 255 characters long, including any periods.
Default subdomains (www, ftp, smtp, and pop) are exempt from this fee, unless you configure those domains for other than the default behavior.

Subdomains: What's a subdomain? | Web Hosting for Beginners
Subdomains are sometimes used to identify individual computers, each having an IP address of its own.
If you visit their site, you will notice that they use different subdomains for all of the topics they cover (e.g., "antiques.about.com" and "autorepair.about.com").
Of course, they could have used subdirectories instead ("about.com/antiques/"), but the use of subdomains makes it easy for them to move a topic to a dedicated computer if it turns out to be very popular.

 Subweb-Subdomain?
Though not so common, there are reasons why it may be useful to define multiple levels of subdomain within a domain, mostly related to convenience of organization of complex situations.
In fact, almost everything that can defined for a domain can also be defined for a subdomain (the only things that can't are way too technical for this piece!) A website defined within a subdomain might have an alias defined for its web host computer, giving its website the address "www.sub.mydomain.com".
Subdomains are names within Domain Name definitions that can be used to define another level of name pointers within the domain.

"SubDomain is a kernel module that mediates system calls such as open, and blocks access to other's that are classified as "dangerous" (mknod, etc.).
SubDomain allows you to configure which files a process is allowed to access, how it is allowed to access them (read / write / execute), and allows you to manipulate what child processes are allowed to do."
Load the kernel module (subdomain.o) and then create a SubDomain configuration file, for example the following file is for XNTPD, which must run as root since it adjusts the system clock, and uses UDP for data transfer making it easy to blind spoof the server.

A Tripod subdomain is an alternative way to access your member pages.
The subdomain consists of your Tripod member name, followed by the Tripod domain name (tripod.com), thus making your member name a "subdomain" of tripod.com (i.e., http://membername.tripod.com).
If a member name has a single dot or dash, the subdomain should work on most ISPs; however, there are ISPs running outdated Internet-resolution software that may not be able to read a subdomain that contains anything other than letters and numbers.
