Pinus classification - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are three main subgenera of Pinus, the subgenus Strobus (White pines or soft pines), the subgenus Ducampopinus (Pinyon, Bristlecone and Lacebark pines), and the subgenus Pinus (Typical pines, or yellow or hard pines).
This classification into the three subgenera is based on cone, seed and leaf characters:
In general, cone and cone scale and seed morphology and leaf fascicle and sheath morphology are emphasized and this seems to result in a classification that has subsections of pines that are understandable and usually readily recognized by their general appearance.

 ECHINOPSIS REVISITED
An extensive basal portion of the filaments in these subgenera have an adhesive surface that serves to hold the stamens together as a compact group in the throat.
The rim stamens in the three subgenera also show bilateral symmetry: Looking at a flower from a top view, the rim stamens on the ventral half of the flower tend to be hook-shaped while those on the dorsal half are merely weakly curved.
There is another perhaps very importance difference between the two subgenera involving the traces of rim stamens in the throat, but I still have to study this.

Marine Fisheries Review: An historical review of Sebastes Taxonomy and Systematics - rockfish research
Five subgenera have species in both the northwest and northeast Pacific Ocean, six have species only in the northwest Pacific, and ten are exclusively in the northeast Pacific.
Some of the subgenera have been proposed as genera, and some groups of subgenera have been considered as genera.
The subgenera are usually not mentioned in field guides, although Sebastomus is occasionally noted since the species are quite distinctive externally.

Nothobranchius subgenera   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
I have not seen the original descriptions of the five subgenera of Nothobranchius.
I assume G.S. Myers' description of Adiniops, based on how long ago he worked and the few species known at the time, is superficial and based on quite few physical considerations compared with today's standards.
In short, are subgenera as presently defined acceptable ichthyology or superficialities to be disregarded?

NMITA Molluscs: Identification and taxonomic consistency
For both recently revised and unrevised groups my taxonomic philosophy has been to recognize as genera and subgenera the smallest easily diagnosable and consistently recognizable, putative supraspecific clades (at least within the geographic and temporal limits of the study).
These may be recognized as such from both the inverted commas around the name and the listing of closely related taxa (often subgenera of the genus concerned) in the current systematic listings of gastropods and bivalves.
One subgenus (of the 11 neotropical subgenera I currently recognize) is the sixth most abundant mollusc in the PPP Caribbean fossil collections (Jackson et al., 1999).

 INFRAGENERIC RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN PHILODENDRON
Phylogenetic and phenetic analyses by Mayo (1986, 1988) have shown Philodendron to have three distinct subgenera which are distinct in vegetative and floral morphology, floral anatomy and to some extent by distribution.
The geological history of the continent would probably agree with this since eroded mountain plateaus of eastern Brazil are much older than the current land surfaces of the Amazonian basin.
Philodendron is difficult to define and though very distinct at the generic level (See section on "Suprageneric Relationships" for separation from similar genera Dieffenbachia and Homalomena) it is primarily defined by its negatives, i.e., it lacks the specific characteristics of P.

The female genitalia of the two currently recognized subgenera are described.
Treatment of the genital morphology of each subgenus includes a composite description, description of subcategories, detailed description and illustration of the type species, list of the species examined, list of published illustrations of species with their citations, and a discussion.

Marques joined the two subgenera because both have a carinated, trilobed posterior petal, a thick style, and an apically-free staminal sheath.
The decision to put the two subgenera together was primarily based on the morphological study of the Brazilian species.
This character is of crucial importance since it was the only morphological character that separated the three subgenera in the cladistic analysis.

 PEET - Austral Staphylinidae
In the Aleocharinae in particular, widely varying usages of genera and subgenera further complicate the attempt to provide such summary data.
Subgenera may have regional fields checked, but since many species have never been assigned to subgenera, their distributions must be regarded as incompletely documented here; in some cases subgenera are coded the same as the genus to which they belong, which may be inaccurate.
The names and current status of the taxa included here are largely from the same sources as those used for the catalog of austral species of Staphylinoidea, which should be consulted for details.

We used both multilocus enzyme electrophoresis and morphometry on 24 male specimens of the Old Word genus Phlebotomus (with three of its subgenera: Phlebotomus, Spelaeophlebotomus and Australophlebotomus), and on 67 male specimens of the three New World genera, Warileya, Brumptomyia and Lutzomyia, (with three subgenera of Lutzomyia: Lutzomyia, Oligodontomyia and Psychodopygus).
Phenetic trees derived from both techniques were similar, but disclosed relationships that disagree with the present classification of sand flies.
Both studies disagreed, however, on the evolutionary status of the NW genus Brumptomyia that is close either to Lutzomyia (Rispail 1990) or to Phlebotomus (Galati 1992), as well as that of the OW genus Sergentomyia (not included in our material), clustered with Spelaeophlebotomus (Rispail 1990) or with Lutzomyia (Galati 1992, 1995).
