BBC - Southampton Music - Showcase - Subgiant
Southampton based Subgiant have been around for a few years, working in a loosely defined cross-over genre, mixing samples and decks with live guitars and bass.
Subgiant could probably add a bit of Country and Western if they wanted to - and they'd still be able to make it work.
Subgiant cranked up the volume, but held on to the laid-back atmosphere.

  subgiant
A star that has stopped fusing hydrogen in its core and has begun to evolve off the main sequence, increasing in size and luminosity, on its way to becoming a red giant.
Subgiants produce energy in a hydrogen-burning shell that surrounds the core.
Subgiants are of smaller radius and lower luminosity than normal giant stars and lie between the main sequence and giant region of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram.

Online Encyclopedia and Dictionary - Subgiant star
Subgiant star is a class of stars that are brighter than normal main sequence (dwarf) stars, but not as bright as true giant stars.
They are believed to be stars that are ceasing or already ceased fusing hydrogen in their cores and starting to swell up to become true giant stars.
Subgiant stars have larger diameters and lower temperature than stars of similar mass in the main sequence.

 HOA: HOA Materials
The K2 subgiant and the B8 primary are in a very close orbit.
The K2 subgiant has expanded to fill its Roche lobe, a teardrop-shaped volume of space in which its gravity is strong enough to hold onto its loose atmospheric material.
As the K2 subgiant tries to expand further, a thin but powerful stream of gas spills from the point of the Roche lobe and crashes down onto the 138 primary star.

In particular, a class T gas supergiant, a red subgiant star (G041), and a red subdwarf star are all in thrall to this star, all in very stable orbits despite enormous distances separating the three objects from the main star.
This red subgiant star is the largest companion of G040, orbiting the white supergiant at a distance of almost a full light-year.
Two nearby stars, G049 and an orange subdwarf, are in extended orbit around this red subgiant, though the orange subdwarf's orbit appears to be quite unstable and decaying over the course of several million years.

Giant and subgiant stars within 100 ly
Subgiant stars are evolving off, or will "soon" leave, the "main sequence" because they are running out of hydrogen to sustain fusion at their cores.
When the star exhausts its core hydrogen and begins to burn hydrogen in a shell around a growing helium core, it brightens and expands and becomes a "subgiant," during which its habitable zone moves outward with the increased heat radiated.

At the start of the subgiant phase (such as a star like Procyon A) the diameter and brightness have increased, but the star has yet to cool down or change color significantly.
Later subgiants that are closer to becoming true giants have larger diameters and lower temperature than stars of similar mass in the main sequence.

AZ - SciDAC Type Ia/Companion Interactions
However, this requires understanding the effect of the impact of the supernova shell on different companion stars to predict the amount of mass stripped and its distribution in velocity and solid angle for the types of binary scenarios that have been proposed as Type Ia progenitor models.
For each scenario, we explore the hydrodynamics of the supernova-secondary interaction, calculate the amount of stellar material stripped from the secondary and the kick delivered by the impact, and construct the velocity and solid angle distributions of the stripped material.
We find that the main sequence and subgiant companions lose 0.15-0.17 solar masses as a result of the impact of the supernova shell, $15\%$ of their mass.

Dots, circles and squares indicate binaries containing a white dwarf and a main-sequence star, an early subgiant, and a horizontal branch star, respectively.
A subgiant spends most of its time at the bottom of the giant branch where its radius is smaller than that of a horizontal-branch star, for this reason the majority of the tidal binaries with a subgiant have a relatively small semi-major axis.
The majority of tidal binaries are born with zero eccentricity and a short orbital period.

 Algol-Type Binary Systems
Most Algol binaries are characterized by their early A or B spectral type main-sequence primary star and late G or K spectral type subgiant.
As the loser (subgiant) continued to expand as it evolved, the mass transfer process reduced its mass.
In Chapter VI the Doppler tomogram of KU Cygni will be interpreted in order to understand the velocity position of the emitting regions, as well as nature of interactions between the mass-transfer stream and the outer edge of the disk.

A subclass of eclipsing binary stars, named after Algol, where the brighter and more massive star is still on the main sequence while the less massive companion has evolved more and has become a subgiant.
It is explained (Crawford 1955) as a result of extensive mass transfer: the now less-massive star originally contained most of the system's mass, and it evolved rapidly beyond the main sequence.
They thus have a light curve characterized by deep primary minima when the dim subgiant eclipses the bright main-sequence star, alternating with scarcely detectable secondary minima when the subgiant is eclipsed.

Subgiant were formed four years ago as a four piece dub band, but then the electronics took over and subgiant was reduced to two, Olly on samplers, synths, electronics, guitar and bass, and Dan on decks, scratching, effects and samplers.
But it's live that subgiant really work, listening to them on CD just isn't the same.

 A stars within 100 light-years
At least 76 stars of spectral type "A" (not including white dwarf stellar remnants) are currently believed to be located within 100 light-years or (or 30.7 parsecs) of Sol.
Of those stars, astronomers believe that five have evolved out of the main sequence into giant stars, while an additional 17 or so may be subgiants (more on nearby giants and subgiants).
Four A-type stars are the most luminous stars located within Sol's immediate neighborhood (within 10 parsecs or 32.6 light-years): Sirius A, Altair, Fomalhaut, and Vega.

Photometric observations demonstrate that the star is constant to +/-0.0001 mag on the radial velocity period, strengthening our interpretation of a planetary companion.
This planet was detected as part of our radial velocity survey of evolved stars located on the subgiant branch of the H-R diagram--also known as the Hertzsprung Gap.
These stars, which have masses between 1.2 and 2.5 solar masses, play an important role in the investigation of the frequency of extrasolar planets as a function of stellar mass.

Where differing spectral types and luminosity classes were assigned to a star by recent catalogues, a range is indicated (e.g., F8-G0V-IV) to avoid the loss of possibly useful information -- for example, indicating variability or subgiant pulsation rather than simple observational error or the imprecision of older equipment and methods.
However, the spectral type of 92 late-type dwarfs (K5-M8) visible from the northern hemisphere and believed to be located within 26 ly (8 parsecs) -- plus another nine suspected nearby dwarfs -- were revised to a standard system presented in 1994 (Henry et al).
On the other hand, stars lacking luminosity class information that are believed to be located farther away than 100 ly were not given a default designation, since they include many FGK stars which may be subgiants or even more highly evolved, giant and supergiant stars.
