Subhumans - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Subhumans are an anarcho-punk band formed in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, UK in 1979 by Dick Lucas, who had formerly been in local bands including The Mental and Stupid Humans.
The band released a demo in 1981 which was heard by members of the band Flux of Pink Indians after being sent to them by Graham Burnett of New Crimes fanzine, who were so impressed that they offered the Subhumans a chance to put out a record on their newly formed Spiderleg label.
The Subhumans occasionally reform for live performances, including at least two major tours of North America in the 21st Century, (Live in a Dive is a product of the first) and they continue to command a strong cult following.

Unrelated to Vancouver's D.O.A.-related Subhumans, these lower-income types from England's Southwest corner were one of the original UK hardcore bands, carving a distinct niche directly between Pistol-punk and the subsequent iconoclastic thrash of Rudimentary Peni.
Assiduously documenting their career with self-released and shoddily recorded live cassettes, the Subhumans' next "professional" release was the eight-song, 45 rpm Time Flies.
The Subhumans' most diverse LP interpolates echoic post-punk, pseudo-reggae, rote rock and ruttish roll.

Last spring, The Subhumans visited San Francisco on their first tour since the days that I used to listen to classic rock radio (and liked it).
This is not to say that The Subhumans' oeuvre contains dated ideas that are no longer relevant -- far from it; their barrages against the mistreatment of animals and wantonness of our commercial society are as pointed as ever.
I departed glad that I had the chance to see The Subhumans, but I knew that it was not the same as seeing them in 1983.

The Subhumans punk band interview by Crisispoint zine
Being the first of their style it was effective until everyone else tried to copy it, then it got numbed and was ruined by loads of useless bands - their present pomp rock stuff just sucks and it's so hypocritical I don't know how they sleep at night - perhaps they don't.
We didn't discuss lyrical attitudes enough - it ended up with me doing all the writing - lyrics, letters, interviews - and forming the bands image as I felt right - this is a bad theory and in the end it helped drive us apart...Get a band together that more or less think the same.
I didn't want to be on the cover but under persuasion agreed as long as it was a live photo - Winston Smith was a good bloke and he didn't distort anything - so I think they were quite good interviews, especially the second one where more ideas came across.

One of the greatest bands to be featured in Fat Wreck Chords' Live In a Dive series, the Subhumans never fail to deliver the most inflammatory of old-school, pogo punk rock over the course of these 26 songs.
It's one of the truly great punk shows committed to record, and the Subhumans prove that some two decades on, they could still play their old favorites with just as much intensity, political venom, and grit -- and play them better, even.
But, by putting together such a masterful live concert album, the Subhumans illustrate just how impacting their music was and how relentlessly relevant it remains.

Subhumans were, between 1980-85, one of the most prolific and original of the evolving UK punk scene; they were based in Warminster, Wiltshire, [SW England], and the lineup was Dick on vocals, Bruce played guitar, Phil on bass, and Trotsky on the drums.
Musical influences were a mix of Sex Pistols, Damned, and similar punk originators, and prepunk bands like King Crimson and Frank Zappa, which led to a style of punk more intricate in its structure than their contemporaries, without losing the base energy and dynamics of punk.

A grungy-looking quartet of punkers (check out the photos on the back cover of this album), Subhumans were a radical British punk group in the vein of the Clash and Conflict, though their sound was different in a couple of ways than both those acts.
