Subhumans // G7 Welcoming Committee Records
The Subhumans and the handful of other punk bands that exploded into being in Vancouver as part of the world-wide punk movement, built a local scene that was wild, raucous, and tempestuous.
Like the other genuine punk bands of the time, they avoided the tired and self-centred subject matter of the stereotypical pop song, and were always engaged with the ferment of the times, often political with a satiric edge.
Canadian authorities eventually arrested the group, known in the press as the Squamish Five, and Gerry was sentenced to ten years in jail.

The band's first show was at an anti-Canada Day celebration (sponsored by anarchists) on July 1st, 1978, but the roots of the group go back years earlier, when a bunch of long-haired social misfits named Brian Goble, Gerry Hannah, Ken Montgomery and Joe Keighley started hanging out together in Burnaby.
Time has been kind to the Subhumans music - it sounds as fresh and invigorating as the day it was cut, and the political sentiments are as valid today as they were in 1979 or '80.

The vast difference between the formative EP and Vicious Circle was largely due to the emergence of the West Coast bands as a touring/distribution force, a first for American punk.
The band started rehearsing for the new LP in the spring of 1981 in their road manager Marvin Goldstein's brother's garage.
Of course, having completed their statement record, and having secured its release on the fledgling, soon to be forgotten local Nimrod Records label, the group still had to make themselves known to the rest of this punk community outside of isolated Indiana.
