Opinions 60 - Comics Reality Checks II: The Bouncing Boy Test (Sep 2001)
For instance, where should we divide comics into the dismal and the sublime?
Comics, after all, did not begin with the costumed superhero, although Bouncing Boy does originate from and belong in that genre.
As such, a theory of comics that excludes his like has taken on the tone of a surly adolescent who rails at anything childlike in an immature attempt to prove his maturity.

You don't have to have read "Kavalier and Clay" to enjoy these snappy little vignettes of costumed superheroics, but readers with a sense of the history of American comics will appreciate the sly jokes and loving inside references.
The only thing missing from Michael Chabon's otherwise sublime "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" was any example of the title characters' comic book art.

“People use comics to tell stories about their own lives,” said Prager who uses comic books in a seminar class he teaches dealing with the Holocaust and World War II in contemporary culture.

Her characters are lively, her dialogue and storylines always engaging, and the watercolor work in her books sublime.

 Eddie Campbell's Egomania (ADD Review)
Eddie Campbell has spent the past couple of years distilling his outstanding autobiographical comics into a series of sublime and rewarding graphic novels, the most recent being After the Snooter.
The Batman article and interview is fascinating for how much it reveals about Campbell and his development as a cartoonist (I'm amazed and gratified he didn't end up doing Batman comics every month -- a bullet dodged, that).
There's something for everyone here, as Campbell rolls out a cartoon essay (the first two chapters of a longer planned graphic novel) on the History of Humour, an interview with a Golden Age Batman artist, an article by Campbell's daughter on the From Hell movie premiere, and an essay about paintings.

Free Comic Book Day 2005 offered up a number of great comics for a wide range of tastes, from the immensely entertaining Amelia Rules to the sublime Superior Showcase.
A lot has happened since then, as Beckett has gone from an independent publisher known for its inexpensive mini-series to an Image Comics studio hoping to become known for reasonably priced original graphic novels, of which Ronin Hood is their first.

In this world, armies of mutants have more or less organized along power lines (shades of Austen and his weird belief that like mutants would want to hang together?), with batteries of telepaths and bruisers and flyers doing their best to fight off the multi-powered beasties and Crawlers that Sublime keeps brewing up.
Morrison clearly celebrates the diversity Sublime is (has always been) threatened by, and thus showers us with a kaleidoscope of magical mutant moments.

As the thought balloon becomes more and more an artifact of an earlier time in the comics medium, I still see a few comic book creators use this device with sublime grace and understanding.
While many comic strips still make use of the thought balloon (it is Garfield's primary means of communication), it has all but disappeared from mainstream comics.
This removes some of the intimacy of the thoughts, while a thought balloon indicates that the reader is sneaking into the character's mind...

Flak Magazine: Review of The Dark Knight Strikes Again, 11.08.02
With "DK2," Miller and colorist Lynn Varley have taken a completely different route from the dark, sublime art of "The Dark Knight Returns." Miller's illustrations are sparse and lacking in background detail (a style he perfected in his award-winning Sin City series).
This means that the joy comics used to provide — such as imagining how much fun it would be to turn invisible, or to fly — is lost.
Just as "The Dark Knight Returns" opened a comic book door to the darker aspects of human life, so does "DK2" show how to return fun to comics.

But as with all of her roles, there is more to this character than meets the eye, and she portrays the sorrow of loss and the joy of friendship with sublime honesty, avoiding overly showy performance even in moments of indescribable grief.
American Splendor - The screen adaptation of Harvey Pekar's autobiographical comics series of the same name uses innovative visual techniques to move us in and out of the comics frame, most seamlessly in a scene in which the actor playing the main character walks from offstage into a videotaped episode of The David Letterman Show.
Both the character and actor attract attention due to their small stature, but it is the wit, intelligence, and smoldering sensuality that Dinklage brings to the role that truly captivates.
