Submarine tender - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Submarines are relatively small compared to most oceangoing vessels, and generally do not have the ability to carry large amounts of food, fuel, torpedoes, and other supplies, nor to carry a full array of maintenance equipment and personnel.
With the increased size and automation of modern submarines, plus their reliance on nuclear power, tenders are no longer as necessary as they once were.
In the United States Navy, submarine tenders are considered auxiliaries, with hull classification symbol "AS".

Tenders were crucial to the ultimate success of World War II's Pacific submarine campaign because of the vast distances that characterized the theater.
Moreover, tenders are manned - particularly at senior levels - with very experienced personnel, and their cumulative expertise is invaluable to the boats that come alongside for repair and refit services.
During their first decade, the Navy's de facto submarine tenders were treated primarily as accommodation ships, and as often as not, these early auxiliaries were anointed as "tenders" simply by being ordered to become one.
