  NLP Submodalities
Notice the submodalities of this picture and I am sure that you can identify several that are different from the picture of someone you enjoy being with.
The submodalities of the internal representations of people we do not enjoy being with will also be similar submodalities and in some way different from the submodalities of people we enjoy being with.
Submodalities, by themselves or as part of other techniques, have been used to assist people to stop smoking, eat more of certain foods and less of others, address compulsion issues, change beliefs and values, enhance motivation, move from stress to relaxation, address phobias, etc.

Submodalities are the way we use our senses in remembering and imagining images and visualizations.

In this case you change the submodalities until you maximize the positive feelings associated with a memory or a visualized goal event.

To discover the submodalities of the visual representation system one would ask whether the internal picture acts as a movie/still, fl and white/color, bright/dark, etc. You will learn how higher levels (Meta-Levels) govern submodalities and hence, perception.
Knowledge of Meta-Levels and how they influence submodalities will result in your ability to resolve grief, change beliefs, change values and to change the feelings of any memory in brief therapy.
Knowledge of submodalities allows the practitioner to communicate and to do therapy with precision.

The secret is to use these submodalities to make your emotions work for you, to use any emotion you want at will.
All of these emotions have submodalities that have to happen in order for you to feel the emotion.

It has to do with recognizing modalities (senses) and submodalities (details about those senses) - and how those are used by our brains with memories and feelings.
What's important about this is that once you realize the role of modalities and submodalities in experience - as well as metalevels and higher levels of processing on those details of our senses ------ you can then alter them deliberately to create change in an individual or yourself.
Submodalities (details about the senses like how colorful the experience is in our memory, the volume of the sound of the experience as coded in our brains, the intensity of the FEELING as coded in our brains, etc.) are the specific details of how the feelings register in our brains.

The concept of submodalities had been part of NLP since the late 1970's, but they were presented primarily as a way of enhancing experiences.
He taught how submodality shifts could be used to change habits (swish pattern), change beliefs, and create motivation or understanding, and how submodality thresholds could be used to break locked-in patterns like compulsions, or to lock in new changes.
In many NLP patterns, we had noticed that location is a very powerful "driving" submodality; it is significant in Timeline work, criteria change work, and belief change work, and in aligning perceptual positions.

Behavior OnLine Forums - Erickson and submodalities   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
I recently read that Bandler got the idea of submodalities from Erickson when he observed Dr. Erickson asking the psychologist (who had referred a patient) how he knew which pictures in his thoughts were of actual events and which were imagined.
He then asked the referred patient, who was having difficulty distinguishing between reality and fantasy, to put certain images into squares and apparently had resolved some of her psychosis in this manner.
I've never come across this story of Erickson using submodalities in this manner (or similar stories) outside of the NLP literature and wondered if it existed somewhere else.
