Cell Transfer Delay: This is defined as the elapsed time between a cell exit event at the measurement point 1 (e.g., at the source UNI) and the corresponding cell entry event at measurement point 2 (e.g., the destination UNI) for a particular connection.
Destination End Station: An ATM termination point which is the destination for ATM messages of a connection and is used as a reference point for ABR services.
It is delineated by connection points at the boundary of the subnetwork.

 Multiprotocol networking--a blueprint
Subnetworking (as the term is used in the Open Blueprint) corresponds to those parts of the lower OSI layers that contain functions dealing with specific communications facilities, as well as frame- and packet-handling formats and dialing procedures.
At the subnetworking layer, the technologies of data communications and telephony are converging on ATM to handle data, voice, and video communications.
Control point services: Each switch is controlled by a node control point that exchanges information with every other switch so as to understand the network topology and the available bandwidth on every link, and to make routing decisions on behalf of the various access agents when they request end-to-end connections.

Since at this point on the link the transmitted signal is at maximum and the receive signal has been attenuated, it may be difficult to maintain an acceptable ACR with the received signal if the cable media allows large amounts of crosstalk leakage to occur.
Point of Control and Observation: A place (point) within a testing environment where the occurrence of test events is to be controlled and observed as defined by the particular abstract test method used.
Subnetwork Management System: A Network Management System that is managing one or more subnetworks and that is managed by one or more Network Management Systems.

Receive filtering for communication interface - Patent 6570884
When the DSAP and SSAP are each equal to 0xAAh and the control field is equal to 0x03h, a subnetwork attachment point (SNAP) header follows the LLC header.
To read the packet data, the ARM7 must determine where the start and end of the data is. The address of the first word of packet data for the packet at the top of the receive FIFO is contained in a pointer register associated with the FIFO.
The end of the current packet is determined by reading another pointer register, which points to the first byte after the last valid byte in the packet at the top of the receive FIFO.

RFC 1483 - Multiprotocol Encapsulation over ATM Adaptation Layer 5
LLC Encapsulation for Routed Protocols In LLC Encapsulation the protocol of the routed PDU is identified by prefixing the PDU by an IEEE 802.2 LLC header, which is possibly followed by an IEEE 802.1a SubNetwork Attachment Point (SNAP) header.
Note that the Common PDU Header and Trailer of the encapsulated frame should not be simply copied to the outgoing 802.6 subnetwork because the encapsulated BEtag value may conflict with the previous BEtag value transmitted by that bridge.
If the egress bridge has already begun transmitting segments of the PDU to an 802.6 subnetwork and then Heinanen [Page 9] RFC 1483 Multiprotocol over AAL5 July 1993 notices that the AAL5 CPCS-PDU has been aborted, it may immediately generate an EOM cell that causes the 802.6 PDU to be rejected at the receiving bridge.

 What is OSI Routing
Broadcast subnetworks, such as Ethernet and IEEE 802.3, direct a single physical message to all nodes on the subnetwork.
These hello messages primarily are intended to convey the subnetwork and network-layer addresses of the systems that generate them.
If the destination address is an ES on another subnetwork in the same area, the IS will know the correct route and will forward the packet appropriately.

The Common Protocol Data Unit (PDU) Header and Trailer are conveyed to allow pipelining at the egress bridge to an 802.6 subnetwork.
If the egress bridge has already begun transmitting segments of the PDU to an 802.6 subnetwork and then notices that the AAL5 CPCS-PDU has been aborted, it may immediately generate an EOM cell that causes the 802.6 PDU to be rejected at the receiving bridge.
A multicast address resolution server (MARS) is used possibly in conjunction with a multicast server to provide IP multicast behavior over ATM point-to-multipoint and/or point to point virtual connections.

Because of the difficulty in bending the cable, transceivers which carried out the Manchester encoding and media-access control (CSMA/CD) are attached directly to the cable and the transceivers connect to the computer NIC's via an attachment unit interface (AUI) where address recognition, error detection and frame transfer is carried out.
To make computer attachment easier, connection multiplexors can be used to connect many computers to a single transceiver.

Cisco Catalyst 3900 Switch - Cisco Systems
Both the Catalyst 3900 and 3920 offer a stack port (optional on the 3900, built-in on the 3920) which allows two units to be interconnected back-to-back, or up to eight units to be interconnected using the Catalyst 3020 Matrix Switch.
As a result, enabling MAC address filtering on inbound ports and destination service access point (DSAP) and Subnetwork Attachment Point (SNAP) type filters on inbound and outbound ports has no effect on the media-rate performance of the switch.
In addition, in configurations where SRT is used between ports or groups of ports, it is possible to control whether traffic is transparently bridged or source-route bridged on a per-protocol basis.

In LLC Encapsulation the protocol of the routed PDU is identified by prefixing the PDU by an IEEE 802.2 LLC header, which is possibly followed by an IEEE 802.1a SubNetwork Attachment Point (SNAP) header.
Padding is added after the PID field if necessary in order to align the user information field of the bridged PDU at a four octet boundary.
Note that in bridged 802.6 PDUs, there is only one choice for the PID value, since the presence of a CRC-32 is indicated by the CIB bit in the header of the MAC frame.

LLC Encapsulation for Routed Protocols In LLC Encapsulation, the protocol type of routed PDUs MUST be identified by prefixing an IEEE 802.2 LLC header to each PDU.
In some cases, the LLC header MUST be followed by an IEEE 802.1a SubNetwork Attachment Point (SNAP) header.
+-------------------------------+ Since the 802.5 Access Control (AC) field has no significance outside the local 802.5 subnetwork, it is treated by this encapsulation as the last octet of the three octet PAD field.

 Asynchronous Transfer Mode
For the IP switching subnetworks, the recommended network mask length is 30 bits.
Depending on your network topology and the number and configuration of logical IP subnetworks (LISs) in your network, you might need to add static routes to other hosts if you want a connection to a host that is on another LIS subnet.
For example, if you were configuring IP switching on Host A in Figure 4-3 and you wanted to route all traffic on all 16.1.1 networks through the IP switch, you would specify 16.1.1/24 as the destination address in Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) format and 16.1.1.6 as the gateway address.

Research has shown that the ear is more sensitive to variations at low amplitude, so non-linear conversion charts (scales) have been defined which allow fewer bits to store the same range in amplitude by providing more points at the quieter end of the scale and fewer at the louder end.
Eight bits allow for one sign bit (for amplitude greater than or less than "zero") and seven bits for the magnitude, which represents one of 128 possible points on a non-linear scale converting samples to amplitudes.
