The subperiosteal facelift is indicated in those who have significant ptosis of the lateral canthus, nasal glabellar soft tissues, tip of the nose, cheeks, angle of the mouth, and jowls.
Subperiosteal dissection also may be performed over the body of the mandible to reposition the soft tissue pad of the chin or to insert implants such as the mandibular matrix system.
Subperiosteal release of the tissues overlying the mandible may be performed either through an intraoral or a submental incision.

The lack of a demonstrable subperiosteal abscess and the absence of roentgenographic evidence of osteitis in the mastoid cellular system establishes the diagnosis of acute mastoiditis with periosteitis.
Subperiosteal abscesses develop frequently in younger children; when they occur in older children, a cholesteatoma should be suspected.
The diagnosis is clinical, however, CT of the temporal bone is required to confirm the presence of rarefying osteitis, coalescence of the air cells and/or subperiosteal abscess.

A careful subperiosteal plane provides maximum protection for the facial nerve, which runs in the fascia fairly closely applied to the periosteum of the arch.
The periosteum must be released at least to the mid-point of the arch, and optimally to the lateral one-third junction of the arch adjacent to the zygomatic temporal suture.
Subperiosteal mid-face lift, though effective at elevating the composite mid-face flap containing all of the various fascial, muscular and dermal elements, doesn’t address changes within the flap that occur with age, such as loss of elasticity, loss of subcutaneous fat or cutaneous ptosis.

Subperiosteal dental implants have been used for more than 35 years as an alternative to endosseous implants. It continues to be one of the most reliable treatment options for the severely atrophied edentulous jaw.
The rationale behind the modern design is to eliminate all struts from the crestal areas and employ secondary strouts to dissipate the loading forces away from the primary struts to the lateral and medial surfaces of the maxillary and mandibular bones.
Undoubtedly, the placement of subperiosteal implants represents a greater trauma and requires a greater knowledge of oral anatomy and surgical skills, but in many edentulous and elderly patients who lack sufficient bone for endosseous implants it continues to be one of the most reliable and cost effective implant techniques.

Subperiosteal dental implants have been used since 1955 (15 years before current endosseous implants arrived as a treatment modality) and are an alternative to endosseous implants.
Subperiosteal implants are a custom made prostheses, individually fabricated for each individual patient from a model obtained either by a direct bone impression or generated by CAD/CAM process from a CT-Scan/3-D imaging of the jaw bones.
The subperiosteal implant needs to be custom fabricated for each patient based on the topography of their jaw.

Widespread subperiosteal resorption is confined to hyperparathyroid bone disease; however, focal areas of subperiosteal resorption may be seen adjacent to a variety of soft tissue processes including tumor, infection, and even articular disorders such as xanthomatosis and gout.

Subperiosteal Implants have been used in completely edentulous (toothless) as well as partially edentulous upper and lower jaws.
These implants are designed for the toothless lower jaw only and are surgically inserted into the jaw bone in three different areas: the left and right back area of the jaw (the approximate area of the wisdom teeth), and the chin area in the front of the mouth.

 Medcyclopaedia - Osteoid osteoma
In the long tubular bones, the osteoid osteomas that are located in the diaphysis (and some that are metaphyseal) typically occur in the cortex as a radiolucent lesion, representing the nidus, surrounded by bone sclerosis with cortical thickening due to endosteal and subperiosteal new bone formation.
Osteoid osteomas that are subperiosteal in location may evoke more limited bone proliferation immediately adjacent to or at a distance from the lesion.
Subperiosteal sites may reveal scalloping of the adjacent cortical surface; in the cancellous bone, a partially or totally calcified lesion with or without a radiolucent margin is identified.

Subperiosteal expansion and cortical remodeling of the human femur and tibia with aging.
Increases with aging in subperiosteal dimensions and second moments of area (measures of bending and torsional rigidity) in femoral and tibial cross sections are documented in an archeological sample from the American Southwest.
These differences appear to be related to variations in the stress or strain levels in different regions of the femur and tibia which result from in vivo mechanical loadings of the lower limb.
