Subpixel rendering - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Subpixel rendering is not practical for use on a CRT.
This reduction in moiré distortion is the primary benefit of subpixel rendered fonts on the conventional RGB Stripe panel.
Although subpixel rendering increases the number of reconstruction points on the display this does not always mean that higher resolution, higher spatial frequencies, more lines and spaces, may be displayed on a given arrangement of color subpixels.

Monotype Imaging: Subpixel Rendering   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Subpixel rendering is ideal for cell phones, e-books, PDAs, digital cameras, camcorders or any type of device using a color LCD that needs to display small, highly-legible text.
Subpixel rendering takes advantage of vertical LCD screen geometry, wherein each pixel is composed of three individually colored subpixels – red, green and blue.
Subpixel rendering is based on the manipulation of each subpixel rather than the whole pixel.

 Sub Pixel Rendering - PDAPhoneHome.com
What you REALLY need to do is render the font from the vector at 3x the physical resolution (making sure that all strokes and white areas within the letters are three subpixels wide horizontally), then translate that into a subpixel-encoded bitmap.
If you want to use subpixel resolution, you need to carefully keep track of whether it's an even/odd (or, on the i300/ r/g/b) dot and follow the rules to make sure it comes out the color you want it to be.
Subpixel rendering gives you a little more freedom to nudge things to the left or right, but it doesn't "really" give you three times the horizontal resolution.

 4.2.4 Subpixel Testing
We may refer to this method as subpixel sample testing, to distinguish it from the other forms of subpixel testing, which are presented later.
Of course, renderings produced using subpixel testing depend on which portion of the subpixel was chosen to test.
The rendering depicted is optimistic; for every pixel on the boundary, a sample within the graph was chosen.

 H. Dietz's Subpixel Rendering
The simplest reasonable model for the LCD subpixels is that each is given the value of the corresponding color component of the image pixel that occupies the same space.
The subpixel text is significantly more readable in the sense that the full 3x horizontal resolution is being used, but we have clearly sacrificed some color fidelity.
The algorithm it uses is simply that the value for each subpixel is the weighted-average of the values of that color component for each of the neighboring subpixel ideal colors (even if they are not in the same compound pixel).

Rather, it will be possible for applications to create their windowed rendering surfaces with a linear gamma, with the conversion to non-linear gamma being done when the completed frame is swapped to the screen.
Because of the nature of displaced subpixel rendering, its quality is reduced when a pixel in the frame buffer is mapped to more than one physical pixel on the LCD screen.
Displaced subpixel rendering performance will be significantly enhanced when the surfaces are kept in standard RGB format and are directly writeable by the CPU.

LG's 2.4-inch VGA subpixel rendering LCD - Engadget
Yeah, you read that right: LG's got a subpixel rendering 500:1 contrast ratio LCD with a VGA resolution packed into 2.4-inches of screen real estate (which is a pretty astounding 330 pixels-per-inch).
Sure, the whole subpixel rendering bit leaves us a slight but uneasy about the legitimacy of this display being properly VGA resolution, but if you peep the pics a little closer up you'll see that subpixel rendering or not, you just can't really fake that much visual information on-screen.
Subpixel resolution is a trick that works when both pixel and background are shades of gray.

How Sub-Pixel Font Rendering Works   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Once again, sub-pixel rendering, which does a beautiful job of displaying delicate sloping features by fine-tuning the location and width of each pixel, promises to bring italic fonts back into much more widespread use.
As we've seen, the success of sub-pixel rendering depends upon using part of an adjacent pixel to extend an existing pattern of sub-pixels which the eye perceives as a slightly larger white or fl pixel.
Since a few LCD panels have their sub-pixels arranged in B-G-R instead of R-G-B order, any industrial strength delivery of sub-pixel rendering technology will require a user-settable (or operating system readable) option to inform the system's LCD rendering engine whether the sub-pixels are arranged in 'forward' or 'reverse' order.

If the "rendering engine" in software is subpar, you'll see "jerky" or "jumpy" motion" and render artifacts like pixelation or jagged edges on diagonal lines.
A great deal of development was put into Edition's subpixel rendering engine so that it would produce smooth, superfine results on a par with very expensive products (like the multimillion dollar boxes used in Hollywood movies).
"Render quality" is not something most people think about when buying editing software- but slightly rotate a video layer or graphic in your editing software and notice how pixelated the video looks and how jagged the diagonal line is...

Accurate Rendering by Subpixel Addressing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
A simple method is presented for eliminating most pixel-positioning errors when rendering lines and polygons with J.E. Bresenham's algorithm (see IBM Syst.
This eliminates the need to grow polygons to avoid dropout and opens the possibility of drawing surfaces composed of adjacent polygons with read modify/write pixel operations such as add or alpha buffering.
It is shown that most rendering artifacts of today's display controllers ultimately result from pixel-positioning errors, not insufficient z-buffer resolution.

 EE699 Assignment 0a: Thirdy-Something
The LCD subpixel rendering technique improves effective display quality by making use of the fact that the three color channels within each display pixel are spatially distinct and consistently ordered.
Thus, your basic transformation is to take an original image that has 3 times the desired horizontal resolution, and to render that at the output resolution by separately controlling the 3 color channels within each pixel.
For example, simply taking the appropriate channel value from the original pixel that has the same position as this output subpixel does maximize effective resolution, but greatly diminishes color quality: color fringes are seen on many object edges within the image.
