In Free Position mode, the automatic adjustment properties of each subplot is specified independently by six numbers in the range [0,1]: three for horizontal size and position, three for vertical size and position.
Subplots are resized as if they were made of three springs along the horizontal axis, and three springs along the vertical axis.
For instance, if the spring corresponding to the subplot width is infinitely stiff and the springs corresponding to the left and to the right have the same values, resizing the window will keep the subplot width and move it such that spaces at left and right grow or shrink proportionally.

A subplot, sometimes referred to as a "B story" or a "C story" and so on, is a secondary plot strand that is auxiliary to the main action ("'A' story", main plot) of the story.
Subplots may connect to main plots, in either time and place or in thematic significance.
Subplots are distinguished from the main plot by taking up less of the action, having less significant events occur, with less impact on the 'world' of the work, and occurring to less important characters.

Why Stories Work | Tracking Subplots
If a subplot can be forgotten or stripped out of the story with little or no significant consequence to the sequence of events or character growth in the main plot, then it's not a true subplot.
The subplot featuring Scarlett and her father carries the theme, as Scarlett struggles to keep the land that she only comes to truly appreciate at the end.
All the subplot's set-ups, turning points, developments, and resolutions may not occur "on stage" or in the same character's POV, but nevertheless they need to happen to give readers a sense of closure.

 Bambooweb: Subplot
A subplot is a series of connected actions within a work of narrative that function separately from the main plot.
Subplots may connect to main plots, in either time and place or in thematic significance, but they cannot carry forward, strengthen, or explicate that main action.
Subplots often involve supporting characters, those besides the protagonist or William Shakespeare's Henry IV Part II, the main plot concerns Henry's growth from "Hal" the prince to "Henry" the king and the reconquest of French territory.

Being the first noticeable shift from subplot by its true definition to subplot as "a series of scenes unrelated to the main storyline", the variation is subtle.
Some subplots appear to lead viewers towards a resolution, but when the credits roll, onlookers are left wondering "that's it?" Subplots can no longer be classified as stories; that would entail a beginning, middle and end.
However, if they're simply relying on "Subplots for dummies" for instruction, they should recognize their weaknesses and concentrate on one, focused, developed storyline - that alone has proven to be a difficult concept to manage.

 Plot and subplot
Subplots are used to express thematic concerns - they don't have to be as compelling as the main plot (they aren't carrying the novel).
I use the term subplot slightly differently(just to confuse people!) - a secondary plot that involves the main character, but the protagonist (the character a goal who has to overcome obstacles) doesn't have to be the main character - it could be a secondary character or the enemy.
Subplots can be very short and are triggered by a character wanting something strongly - combined with the willingness of the author to spend novel time resolving whether the character gets what he or she wants.

 CJ Carmichael | Events
A subplot is a sequence of events that impact the outcome of a story and at least one of the main characters while remaining of secondary importance to the main plot.
Subplots provide story events that feed into the main plot, enabling the reader to be interested in the story on many levels.
In a story where subplots have been successfully integrated with the main plot, the shifting of action between plot and subplot happens smoothly.

Subplot (also called counterplot) - a secondary or minor plot within a play or other literary work which may contrast with the principal plot, highlight it, or be unrelated.

Because of the splash “Witness” made by using the simple subplot of good cop-bad cop, chances are, another serious story of this type won’t fly because the plot is simple and would have to be better than “Witness.” You must complicate your plot and, ultimately, learn something about the forensic information your story needs.

An example of a hinged subplot can be found in the original "Star Wars." Han Solo's debt to Jaba the Hutt is a story in its own right with Han as the Main Character.
The purpose of having a subplot may be two-fold: 1: to enhance a character, theme, plot, or amplify part of the genre of the "work" and/or 2: to move the course of the main story in a direction it could not dramatically go in and of itself.
Use both the parallel and hinged subplots to enhance your story's depth and move it in directions it could not legitimately go with only the main plot.

National Novel Writing Month - Forums - Young Adult & Youth - Is a romantic subplot necessary?   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Almost all the YA novels that I know seem to have some sort of romantic subplot in them, and it seems sometimes like it is just thrown in there with no real reason or anything.
The book I'm currently editing originally had a major romantic subplot, but then i realized that it was so forced and that it had absolutely nothing to do with the core story, so i removed it and just made the "couple" best friends, like in the movie My Girl.
That said, I don't really -mind- a romantic subplot in things I read, and in at least one book I really enjoyed romance was a prime theme, but it can get obnoxious very easily if handled wrong or just thrown in because.
