Substance abuse often appears as one of a cluster of behaviours leading to increased costs to states; thus, solving the addiction problem is a necessary step towards eliminating those costs, but it will not always be sufficient.
Following that, the prevalence of substance abuse (by gender and type of substance) was multiplied by the number of persons in the state’s workforce (broken down by gender) to obtain the estimated number of substance abusers in the workforce (broken down by gender and type of substance).
Substance abuse by students might necessitate increased staff in support and health-care roles or might result in class disruption; violence associated with such substance abuse might require increased school security costs for security personnel and equipment and increased expenses for insurance and workers’ compensation and for repairs and replacement of vandalized or stolen material.

 History of Vitamin D
In 1923 Goldblatt and Soames clearly identified that when a precursor of vitamin D in the skin (7-dehydrocholesterol) was irradiated with sunlight or ultraviolet light, a substance equivalent to the fat-soluble vitamin was produced.
However, because of the rapid rise of the science of nutrition -- and the discovery of the families of water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins -- it rapidly became firmly established that the antirachitic factor was to be classified as a vitamin.
The chemical structures of the vitamins D were determined in the 1930s in the laboratory of Professor A. Windaus at the University of Göttingen in Germany.

Unraveling the Enigma of Vitamin D - Text View
One of the reasons vitamin D was a puzzle to scientists for so many years was that it was initially misidentified as a true vitamin, that is an essential substance that our bodies cannot manufacture and which therefore, can only be obtained from our food.
This active form of vitamin D is a hormone, chemically akin to familiar steroid hormones, such as the sex regulators testosterone and estrogen and the stress regulator cortisol.
Evidence for reclassifying the active form of vitamin D came with the realization that 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 is produced by the kidneys and that its secretion by the kidneys is followed by its build up in cell nuclei of the intestine, where it regulates calcium metabolism.

Substance abuse brings with it a diverse array of human problems in every sphere of life, including decreased health, increased mortality, familial and social dysfunction, impaired educational and vocational opportunities, and increased involvement with the criminal justice system.
Notwithstanding the lack of a formal substance abuse prevention infrastructure, there are numerous national and state-level organizations and entities that service some of the needs of such an infrastructure, including funding prevention activities and research, providing accreditation and certification, providing mechanisms for quality assurance and control, and disseminating information.
Thus, in the field of substance abuse prevention, there is a disparate array of organizations, funding streams, and even definitions as to what effective prevention means.

One is the full-length receptor, and the other a shortened version with fewer amino acids with the addition of substance P to cell cultures, the cells both responded with an increase in calcium ions, but used distinct signaling pathways.

The theory of harm reduction (1) as it relates to substance abuse treatment has been one of the most fruitful developments in the theory and technique of substance abuse treatment, emerging from the integration of the formerly disconnected world of psychology along with the related techniques of relapse prevention (2) and motivational interviewing (3).
In this program, patients are accepted at various levels of substance abuse as long as the outpatient level of care seems appropriate, but they are told clearly that the long term goal is abstinence from all addictive substances, thus assimilating abstinence-based treatment techniques into a harm reduction theory.
This contrasts with traditional abstinence-based substance abuse treatment in which the therapist clearly states that the patient is in denial of the problem partly due to the drug’s ill effects on the patient’s judgment (5) and needs to see the reality of the problem immediately in order for the work to begin (9).

The Dualism of Musical Substance | Rudhyar Archival Project | Musical Works and Writings
The composer born in Germany in 1800 might be a Beethoven or a spiritless figure; but in any case he would be obliged to use the instruments, the notation, the scales, to conform to the general attitude to music of his civilization.
The efforts required are so overwhelming as to preclude almost the possibility of working along such lines for a composer who is essentially a creative force needing to express himself, and who moreover is not wealthy or favored with wealthy patronage.
Several pioneers are beginning to study Music in terms of universal Laws, to probe the meaning and contents of the musical substance which we are bound to use to-day if we want to be heard, to work toward the establishment of a new and fuller and more logical substance.

TIP 26: Substance Abuse Among Older Adults
Substance abuse, particularly of alcohol and prescription drugs, often goes undetected among adults over 60 in part due to societal reasons - older adults tend to be ashamed about drinking or drug problems and see them as a moral failing.
Because so much of older adults' substance abuse is never even identified, this TIP is aimed at not only substance abuse treatment providers but also primary care clinicians, social workers, senior center staff, and anyone else who has regular contact with older adults.
The TIP discusses the relationship between aging and substance abuse and offers guidance on identifying, screening, and assessing not only substance abuse but also disorders such as dementia and delirium that can mask or mimic an alcohol or prescription drug problem.
