Topic: Substance abuse rehabilitation

Substance abuse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Substance abuse refers to the overindulgence in and dependence on a stimulant, depressant, or other chemical substance, leading to effects that are detrimental to the individual's physical or mental health, or the welfare of others.
There are on-going debates as to the exact distinctions between substance abuse and substance dependence, but current practice standard distinguishes between the two by defining substance dependence in terms of physiological and behavioral symptoms of substance use, and substance abuse in terms of the social consequences of substance use.
Substance abuse is sometimes used as a synonym for drug abuse, drug addiction, and chemical dependency, but actually refers to the use of substances in a manner outside sociocultural conventions.

Drug rehabilitation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Drug rehabilitation is an umbrella term for process of medical and/or psychotherapeutic treatment, for dependency on psychoactive substances such as alcohol, prescription drugs, and so-called street drugs such as cocaine, heroin or amphetamines.
The obvious intent is to enable the patient to cease their previous level of abuse, for the sake of avoiding its legal, social, and physical consequences, especially in extreme abuse.
People convicted of minor drug offenses may be sentenced to rehabilitation instead of prison, and those convicted of driving while intoxicated are sometimes required to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

Research: Existential Psychology: An Existential Model for Promoting Life Change: Confronting the Disease Concept   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The action-oriented philosophy of substance abuse programs benefits clients who are ready to make life changes but fails to meet the needs of the large proportion of clients who do not believe in the possibility of change or understand how to initiate it.
However, rehabilitation programs generally provide little opportunity for clients to explore and resolve their doubts about this fundamental issue; instead, such programs tend to exacerbate clients' confusion by presenting a contradictory mix of self-help ("bootstrap") philosophy and the "disease concept" of addiction, which connote, respectively, self-determination and personal powerlessness.
The invocation of the disease concept in substance abuse treatment impresses upon clients in "denial" the seriousness of their problem, but it frequently undermines their subsequent rehabilitation by seemingly conferring upon them the status of victims of a biological predisposition.
