Substitute good - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In economics, one kind of good (or service) is said to be a substitute good for another kind insofar as the two kinds of goods can be consumed or used in place of one another in at least some of their possible uses.
The fact that one good is substitutable for another has immediate economic consequences: insofar as one good can be substituted for another, the demand for the two kinds of good will be bound together by the fact that customers can trade off one good for the other if it becomes advantageous to do so.
The opposite of a substitute good is a complement good.

 NEA: No Substitute for Quality
I interviewed groups of administrators in representative districts, collected and analyzed surveys from regular and substitute teachers, and interviewed secondary students in one district about their views on good and bad substitute teachers and their ideas about how to improve the quality of learning that goes on when a substitute teacher is in the classroom.
Students immediately decide how "good" a substitute will be on the basis of whether he or she is reading a newspaper when they enter the room.
Many substitutes indicated that their best substituting experiences were in schools with a strong support system that included the principal, the other teachers, and the secretaries.

Being a substitute teacher (supply teacher in Canada) lets teacher candidates learn if they really want to teach, the grade level they prefer, the type of administrator they want to work for and local school districts and their requirements.
Substitute teaching also exposes them to what other teachers are doing, so they can modify the best ideas for their own use.
A good substitute teacher may have but one problem in the classroom -- being overlooked for a full-time job for a teacher new to the district.

 Basic Concepts of Economic Value
The economic value of a particular item, or good, for example a loaf of bread, is measured by the maximum amount of other things that a person is willing to give up to have that loaf of bread.
If we simplify our example “economy” so that the person only has two goods to choose from, bread and pasta, the value of a loaf of bread would be measured by the most pasta that the person is willing to give up to have one more loaf of bread.
Economic values are also affected by the changes in price or quality of substitute goods or complementary goods.

Substitute goods: A Glossary of Political Economy Terms - Dr. Paul M. Johnson
(Of course, substitutability of one for the other is a matter of degree, ranging from almost perfect interchangeability to only partial interchangeability.) The relative costs of using one good versus its substitute is apt to play a major role in determining which one each user chooses to purchase.
An example of substitutable consumer goods might be compact disks and cassette tapes, both of which can be used as media for selling recorded musical performances to the public, even though there are significant differences between the two in terms of sound quality, durability, and the cost of the equipment needed to play them.
Examples of substitutable producers' goods might include coal versus natural gas (versus fuel oil versus nuclear fuels versus windmills etc) as alternative means to power generators for producing electricity.

Basically a good "sub" blends into the school as if they are a part of the school in the sense that you often do not even realize that the "classroom" teacher is away because the "sub" is handling the class and teaching the lessons as should be done.
A good sub will leave the teacher a note indicating how the day went, helpful students, or students that did not have good discipline.

CIOL : Enterprise Processes : CRM is not a substitute for good customer data quality processes
However, CRM software is not a substitute for good customer data quality processes, and often does little on its own to address duplicate customer records, misspelled or inaccurate addresses, missing relationships between complex entities, etc.
Surprisingly, a good portion of the cost attributed to CRM "integration" projects is often devoted to cleaning and consolidating legacy customer information.
Bad customer data can create misleading impressions about the number and type of customers, leading to customer dissatisfaction if a customer is not recognized as part of a larger entity or group.
