California Courts: Rules: Title One: Rule 48. Substituting parties; substituting or withdrawing attorneys
Substitution of parties in an appeal or original proceeding must be made by serving and filing a motion in the reviewing court.
Former rule 48(b) required the substitution to be signed by the party, the former attorney, and the new attorney.
To protect privacy, revised rule 48(c)(2) provides that the proof of service of the motion need not include the address of the party represented; but if the motion is granted, the withdrawing attorney must promptly provide the court and the opposing party with the party's current or last known address and telephone number.

Changes in substitution rules have been almost an annual topic of discussion for the rules committee and are contentious primarily because the three divisions do not always share the same philosophy when it comes to restricting the number of substitutions.
The rules committee reviewed results from its annual rules survey and paid particular attention to the question of whether the idea of limiting substitutions with no reentry in any period was supported.
The options include (1) leaving the rule as it is, (2) having reentry in both halves and all overtime periods, and (3) having a predetermined number of substitution opportunities for use throughout the entire game.

The amended rule will apply to all actions brought by public officers for the government, and to any action brought in form against a named officer, but intrinsically against the government or the office or the incumbent thereof whoever he may be from time to time during the action.
Automatic substitution under the amended rule, being merely a procedural device for substituting a successor for a past officeholder as a party, is distinct from and does not affect any substantive issues which may be involved in the action.
The amended rule establishes a time limit for the motion to substitute based not upon the time of the death, but rather upon the time information of the death is provided by means of a suggestion of death upon the record, i.e.

(In fact, one may view the substitution rule as a major justification of the Leibniz formalism for integrals and derivatives.) The formula is used to transform an integral into another one which (hopefully) is easier to determine.
Examples Consider the integral [\int_{0}^2 t \cos(t^2+1) \,dt] By using the substitution x = t2 + 1, we obtain dx = 2t dt and [\int_{0}^2 t \cos(t^2+1) \,dt = \frac{1}{2} \int_{0}^2 \cos(t^2+1) 2t \,dt = \frac{1}{2} \int_{1}^{5}\cos(x)\,dx = \frac{1}{2}(\sin(5)-\sin(1)).] Here we used the substitution rule "from right to left".

The former rule was limited to the disability of the judge, and made no provision for disqualification or possible other reasons for the withdrawal of the judge during proceedings.
Manifestly, a substitution should not be made for the personal convenience of the court, and the reasons for a substitution should be stated on the record.
Several courts concluded that the text of the former rule prohibited substitution of a new judge prior to the points described in the rule, thus requiring a new trial, whether or not a fair disposition was within reach of a substitute judge.

There are effectively two market value substitution rules, one which applies to the capital proceeds for a CGT event and the other which applies to the cost base of an asset.
Where it operates it substitutes market value for the capital proceeds from a CGT event, or in the old paralance, the consideration in the respect of the disposal of an asset (former section 160ZD(2)).
Where the market value substitution rule applies, it substitutes the market value of an asset at the time of acquisition for the first element of the cost base and reduced base of that CGT asset.

Calculus I (Math 2413) - Integrals - Substitution Rule for Indefinite Integrals   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
A natural question at this stage is how to identify the correct substitution.  Unfortunately, the answer is it depends on the integral.  However, there is a general rule of thumb that will work for many of the integrals that we’re going to be running across.
How, do we know if we got the correct substitution?  Well, upon computing the differential and actually performing the substitution every x in the integral (including the x in the dx) must disappear in the substitution process and the only letters left should be u’s (including a du).
Since this document is also being presented on the web we’re going to put the rest of the substitution rule examples in the next section.  With all the examples in one section the section was becoming too large for web presentation.
