Subsystems - Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing
The use of COTS components as key subsystem building blocks maximizes the re-use of both common hardware and software building blocks tightly coupled with the programmatic support services we deliver.
By maintaining flexibility in systems designs, CW Subsystems is able to solve the most difficult legacy subsystem upgrades, and mitigate risk by reducing development time and program costs.
The Curtiss-Wright Subsystems division offers integration and system customization for customers who prefer to focus their efforts on the end application, rather than the intricacies of developing and integrating low-level hardware and software components.

Computer Security Subsystem Interpretation of the TCSEC   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Since subsystems, by their very nature, do not meet all of the requirements for a class Cl or higher computer system, it is most appropriate to associate subsystem ratings with the D division of the TCSEC.
Subsystems being evaluated for the D2 class must meet the requirements and interpretations for the Dl class plus the additional requirements and interpretations for the D2 class.
For subsystems that create audit data and pass it to an external auditing collection and maintenance facility, the audit record structure shall be documented; however, the procedures for examination and maintenance of audit files may be left to the external auditing facility.

 Cassini-Huygens: Spacecraft-Orbiter Engineering Subsystems
The Command and Data Subsystem is the "brain" of the spacecraft.
For telecommunications, the radio frequency subsystem produces an X-band carrier at 8.4 Ghz, modulates it with data received with data received from CDS, amplifies the X-band carrier band-carrier power to produce 20Watts from the Traveling Wave Tube Amplifiers (TWTA), and delivers it to the antenna subsystem.
The parts of this subsystem used for the radio science instruments are: The High-gain Antenna (ANT), the Ultra Stable Oscillator (USO), the Deep Space Transponders (DSTs), the X-band Traveling Wave Tube Amplifiers (X-TWTAs), and the X-band Traveling Wave Tube Amplifier.

MILLER SUBSYSTEMS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Motor, the subsystem which moves the system or parts of it in relation to part or all of its environment or moves components of its environment in relation to each other.
Encoder, the subsystem which alters the code of information input to it from other information processing subsystems, from a "private" code used internally by the system into a "public" code which can be interpreted by other systems in its environment.
Subsystems vs Components: Components are "objects" that are arranged in networks, with relations and patterns of interaction that all add up to the functioning of a system.

Continuously available computer memory systems - Patent 5848230
Upon detection of a non-recoverable failure in a primary subsystem, the backup subsystem substantially immediately assumes the tasks of the primary subsystem while the spare subsystem is integrated into the operation of the computer memory storage system.
This includes the provision of backup and spare subsystems for each primary functional subsystem, fault detectors capable of detecting and/or compensating for a failure in either the primary or backup subsystems and, where necessary, circuits for automatically swapping into service one of the two remaining subsystems for a failed one of the redundant subsystems.
During operation, these may be used in such a manner that one of the three subsystems provides the entire required function and, upon failure of the primary subsystem, the backup subsystem is swapped in for the primary subsystem and the spare subsystem then takes the place of the backup subsystem.

Subsystems which are designed to implement discretionary access controls to assist a host in controlling the sharing of a collection of objects must comply with all of the TCSEC requirements as outlined below for features, assurances and documentation.
Subsystem architecture evaluation is designed to provide operational assurances with regard to the design and implementation of the protection mechanisms of the subsystem and its interfaces to the host/host TCB.
Subsystem integrity evaluation is designed to provide operational assurances with regard to the correct operation of the protection mechanisms of the subsystem and its interfaces to the protected system.

 VisualWorks 7.3 Subsystems
Subsystem prerequisites are about what is "active" and running in the system.
What differentiates them is that a Subsystem class has to be instantiated as an object, and it is the subsystem object that is activated.
Clearly, the VW engineers are using these subsystems as a new way to structure and manage the functionality of their increasingly complex system -- nothing to argue with there.

It is clear that these particular subsystems do not operate in isolation from the other ten, however in order to examine the model in light of weak signal research, it will not be necessary to consider them until Part II.
On another, related note, most information processing subsystems in organizations are tuned to receive and process standard signals--ones that are expected (even though their content and value may be surprising).
They will fail because, even though the new system has remodeled all of its information processing subsystems to handle the new type of messages, the subsystems of the parent organization are still unable to process the information or understand its value.

RFC 724 (rfc724) - Proposed official standard for the format of ARPA Netw   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
As message service subsystems on various host systems (especially TENEX) developed to the point where rudimentary parsing of incoming messages was being done, it became clear that it would be desirable to standardize the format and content of the headers of messages transmitted between hosts using these FTP commands.
Message service subsystems on other hosts -- Multics, for example -- began to dabble with other formats for these fields, since there was no standard for them, only to receive complaints from users of TENEX message service subsystems that their "non- standard" message headers could not be parsed according to the (de facto) "standard" syntax.
Implementators of message-processing subsystems who had not received RFC 680 proceeded to go their own ways, feeling justified in doing so, while those who accepted RFC 680 as a standard felt justified in complaining to -- and about -- those whom they considered to be maverick implementors of idiosyncratic message service subsystems.

A magnetometer boom appendage is typically the longest component of the structure subsystem on a spacecraft, although since it is deployable, it may fall under the aegis of the mechanical devices subsystem discussed below.
Telemetry data from science instruments and engineering subsystems is picked up by the CDS, where it is assembled into packages appropriate to the telemetry frame or packet scheme in use (for example CCSDS).
For these reasons, spacecraft data handling subsystems are usually provided with one or more data storage devices such as tape recorders, or the solid-state equivalent of tape recorders which maintain large quantities of data in banks of memory, for example RAM or FLASH.

Local Procedure Call   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
An environment subsystem is a server that appears to perform operating system functions for its native applications by calling system services.
Whenever a client process–an application using the subsystem interface–makes an API call, the corresponding stub function in the DLL passes on the call to the subsystem process.
Therefore, the subsystems can rely on this information, and the LPC forms a secure and reliable communication mechanism because the sender of the messages can be reliably identified.

Like an object, a subsystem is an instance of a class with both state and behavior.
In fact, I would view a package as being a kind of subsystem; an instance of the Package class of subsystems, with classes and methods as their contents.
Interactions between subsystems are through a special kind of object called a Capability that carries not only addressability but also rights of use.

Concrete Architecture of the Linux Kernel   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Within the kernel layer, Linux is composed of five major subsystems: the process scheduler (sched), the memory manager (mm), the virtual file system (vfs), the network interface (net), and the inter-process communication (ipc).
Further, the process scheduler depends on the IPC subsystem for the semaphore queues that are used in bottom-half-handling (discussed in Section 3.3).
In the implicit invocation case, a subsystem registers its capabilities with another subsystem; since the access to the registered subsystem is through function pointers, the cfx tool was not able to detect these dependencies.
