Subtropics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The subtropics refers to the zones of the Earth immediately north and south of the two tropic zones, which are bounded by the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, at latitude 23.5 ° north and south.
The term 'subtropics' describes the climatic region found adjacent to the tropics, closer to either the north or south pole latitudinal.
In certain areas of the world the subtropics are plagued by tropical cyclones that originate in the tropics in the summer and fall.

Johnson and McPhaden -- Interior Pycnocline Flow from the Subtropical to the Equatorial Pacific Ocean
Interior circulation pathways from the subtropics to the equator are markedly different in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres of the Pacific Ocean.
In the Southern Hemisphere subtropics the three pathways for subducted water are similar, with the significant exception that the waters subducted farthest east flow directly northwestward toward the equator in the southern branch of the SEC.
The relatively homogenous region between these fronts, with slightly fresher subtropical waters advected eastward in the equatorward limb of the gyre and slightly saltier equatorial waters advected westward in the northern limb, is consistent with a tracer swirling around the gyre edge and homogenizing in the gyre interior.

Seamless Poleward Atmospheric Energy Transports and Implications for the Hadley Circulation (Trenberth and Stepaniak, ...   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The downward branch is driven by the cooling in the subtropics that mainly arises from energy transport to higher latitudes by transient baroclinic eddies that are stronger in the winter hemisphere.
Hence the cooling by transient eddies in the subtropics is the fundamental driver of the Hadley circulation and realizes the seamless transport from Tropics to extratropics, while tropical sea surface temperature determine where the upward branch is located.
The relatively clear skies in the subtropics further provide for ample absorption of solar radiation at the surface where it feeds strong evaporation, that exceeds precipitation, and supplies the equatorward flow of latent energy into the upward branch of the Hadley circulation as well as the poleward transports into mid-latitude storm tracks.

ARS Project: Evaluation of Beef Cattle Germplasm for the Subtropics of the United States (405830) Annual Report
Compatibility between beef cattle type (i.e., breed) and the environment is critical in harsh environmental zones such as the subtropics.
Brahman-cross cattle are well suited for use in the subtropical United States because of their adaptation to adverse conditions; however, this is at least partially negated by the lower prices paid for Brahman-cross calves because of poor carcass quality especially tenderness.
This is difficult in the subtropics where cows and calves must be adapted to hot and humid weather but after weaning calves are transported to other areas of the country and fed in feedlots in cooler climates.

Gardening in the Subtropics Grower Guide   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The climate in the humid subtropics is typified by year round rainfall, the majority of which falls in the summer months, and by temperatures which are less extreme than those found in the southern temperate zone.
Whilst the subtropics does not have the diverse palette available in the tropics, the diversity of plants however can grow is exponentially much larger than that of southern climates.
A feature of the natural vegetation in humid subtropical and tropical climates is the appearance of epiphytes on trees where there is adequate rainfall.

Of all the things that went right with the Subtropics Experimental Music and Sound Arts Festival (ST-18) this year, my favorite was the wonderful sense of community from the many volunteers provided by our partner, the Miami Performing Arts Center.

Interpretive Summary: In the hot-humid subtropics of the United States, the beef cattle industry is largely cow-calf.
The Senepol is an adapted non-Zebu breed from U.S. Virgin Islands and the Tuli is an adapted Sanga breed from Zimbabwe.
Technical Abstract: To determine the maternal and reproductive performance of adapted F1 cows in the subtropics, 42 Brahman x Angus, 34 Senepol x Angus, and 50 Tuli x Angus cows were bred to Angus bulls to calve first and subsequently to Charolais bulls to calve as three- to eight-yr-olds.

For nearly 20 years, fest founder and artistic director Gustavo Matamoros has been bringing experimental music to Miami, often staging events in small storefronts and tiny venues with the artists outnumbering the audience.
This year's tribute to John Cage, a collaboration with the Merce in Miami series, spotlighted a variety of artists and music by composers who were influenced by or worked directly with Cage, Merce Cunningham's longtime partner and collaborator, and Cunningham.
One aspect that needs to be reexamined is the strange scheduling: It's tough for people to catch Subtropics events when they overlap with those taking place in the two larger venues.

 Flu in the subtropics
A new study shows that tropical and subtropical countries suffer far more illness and death during flu outbreaks than previously imagined, with both hospital admissions and deaths rising considerably during a flu outbreak.
Researchers in Hong Kong (which is in the subtropics) realised that they were well placed to study the impact of flu in such a location.
Hong Kong is a wealthy subtropical city and it is different in many respects from low-income countries in the tropics, which face massive problems with other diseases and lack the modern health care that is available in Hong Kong.

A model study of temperature anomaly propagation from the subtropics to tropics within the South Atlantic thermocline
A water mass flow formed by the Benguela Current and the South Equatorial Current connects the eastern subtropics to the western tropics through the Atlantic upper thermocline.
Our results suggest that it is a realistic scenario and that the time scale and trajectory of the movement can be explained to first approximation by time-mean flow advection, since salinity compensation is tempering the density perturbation.

 Subtropics Music Festival
This latter category, as a matter of fact, seems to be the area in which the Subtropics Festival shines.
The dominance of Western Europe and New York of the avant garde (despite the fact that Riley comes from the West Coast) has, to a certain extent, dictated a certain direction in avant garde circles in the 1970's and 1980's-everything seemed to need to pass muster in New York before it was accepted elsewhere.
One of the works that I saw featured in an early Subtropics festival, which consisted of getting a CD to misread as the sound source, would probably be greeted with yawns in the Northeast or in more traditional areas.
