 [No title]
Cocktail is a stimulating liquor composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters -- it is vulgarly called a bittered sling and is supposed to be an excellent electioneering potion, inasmuch as it renders the heart stout and bold, at the same time that it fuddles the head.
Cocktails were for "sissies and limp-wrist types" and "'hen-parties' given by well-to-do matrons and their debutante daughters" (1980: 339).
Cocktail music's blend of pianos, vibraphones, guitars, and sultry ballroom orchestras is fashioned precisely to allay the nightclub's potential bedlam of bristling egos, inebriated banter, and clinking crystal.

ijcs #3 - suburbia - introduction by david banash and anthony enns
While suburban architecture and lifestyles are most commonly associated with a bland, middle-class, mainstream torpor, suburbia taken as a text tends to elicit markedly extreme positions.
From his position, suburbanization is a completely positive development, and his argument comes down to the simple fact that, as he puts it, the people who live in the suburbs like it: "[T]he lesson for me is that people choose to live where they do because their environment provides what they most value" (36).
Drawing on a wide range of historical documents, she demonstrates the social forces that shaped the late nineteenth-century suburbanization of Chicago, emphasizing the role of Victorian ideologies of gender, class, and domesticity.

The suburban dweller is vulnerable and rootless in the sense that he or she is like a cog moving in someone else's machine.
This portrayal of suburban life is consistent with many sociological studies of the fifties, such as Whyte's The Organization Man, that popularized the notion of the rising housing developments as being blighted by a startling conformity.

The Feminine Mystique Chapter 1 - Betty Friedan (1963) Chapter 1 - "The Problem that Has No Name"
The suburban housewife--she was the dream image of the young American women and the envy, it was said, of women all over the world.
Millions of women lived their lives in the image of those pretty pictures of the American suburban housewife, kissing their husbands goodbye in front of the picture window, depositing their stationwagonsful of children at school, and smiling as they ran the new electric waxer over the spotless kitchen floor.
I saw the same signs in suburban ranch houses and split-levels on Long Island and in New Jersey and Westchester County; in colonial houses in a small Massachusetts town; on patios in Memphis; in suburban and city apartments; in living rooms in the Midwest.

As a child of a hopelessly time-warped cocktail set, I spent many contented evenings wandering through parties with gin-soaked olives stuck on my fingers, intrigued by how a few couples in dress-up clothes and some jazz on the stereo transformed our ordinary living room into a scene as glamorous and sophisticated as old fl-and-white movies.
Though hosting a cocktail party requires more planning and attention to detail than simply filling the bathtub with ice and hucking in six packs, it's a surprisingly manageable task-provided one has the proper knowledge and equipment.
They may just be another phase of the pop culture moon, but whether they're trend or tradition, cocktail parties are a welcome diversion from the strip-mall microbrewery madness of fin de siecle drinking.

McCourt refuses to genuflect to any of them: not the brutal army officer who takes away his weekend pass for refusing to pick up a cigarette butt, not the smooth-talking bank executive who invites him to become a salaryman, not the officious high-school principal who hires him as a teacher.
McCourt, who became a writer late in life after drinking in the same bars as Mailer and Kerouac, is fighting the last war in such lame passages -- a war that was won by his fellow rebels back about 1960.
Perhaps it's only fair to let McCourt take his belated potshots at these frayed targets now that he is, finally, up and publishing, but fair is not what literature is about.

Here, not only can he see his mother's message sent and successfully received by his father, but he can also read, in the bruise that now marks him, the power of the commitment that his parents have to each other and to him.

Weberian criticism of Betty Friedan's "The Feminine Mystique"
Much of Friedan's pages are taken up by efforts to debunk those traditional male authorities in psychology who laid down that the fulfillment of women's psychology stopped with domestic reproduction: her goal is to show that women can, should, and want to work ("produce").
The "call" which people of modernity experience -- the suburban white female housewives included -- is the reminder of the non-exhaustion of human existence by the material meaning of life at an era when these religious, cosmological, and spiritual orders have lost their believability.
The first of these (the confusion between self-fulfillment and "economic productivity") seems to be the most immediate cause for how Friedan's fundamentally anti-consumerist spirit behind her solution to suburban housewives' search for meaning in life could have transited into a promotion of consumerism.
