  Salon | "SubUrbia"
One of the points made by "Suburbia" is that the deadening sameness of the '90s middle-American landscape — chronicled before the film's credits in long slow pans of decrepit condo complexes, "Everything 99 Cents" stores, McDonald's-laden strips and carelessly thrown-up tract housing —; prematurely throttles teenagers' escape mechanisms.
"Suburbia" is based on monologuist Eric Bogosian's off-Broadway play of the same name, and it's built around a structure familiar from previous Linklater films like "Slackers," "Dazed and Confused" and "Before Sunrise": following a group of characters through nights of joy-riding, soul-searching and intermittent debauchery to a coolly indifferent but invariably new dawn.
The name of "Suburbia's" town, Burnfield, points to the former, as does the gas meter on which the characters sit and brood or the handguns that periodically appear during the story.

The hour-long film explains how suburbia, with its promise of “space, affordability, convenience, family life and upward mobility” has come to embody the aspirations of North American society.
To its critics, suburbia is emblematic of an economic model in which practically everything North Americans consume, from eggs to iPods, must be shipped to us from far-flung locales.

 THE END OF SUBURBIA
Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream.
But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life.
With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply.

The former two are wonderful, but suburbia seems some hybrid vacuum in between unless it is done well, such as Kingston, or brilliantly such as Richmond.

While SubUrbia has more of a narrative line than Slacker (it would be hard for it not to), it still seems a little too intent on mental masturbation, a little too obsessed with the angst of the ordinary and a little too...
Based on the play of the same name by Eric Bogosian, SubUrbia is one night in the life of a group of suburban teens.
The problem is not that SubUrbia's characters don't suffer intense pain over their hum-drum lives, but rather that it's shown through verbal sparring in which the characters realize--over and over again--that both their blessing and their curse is that life goes on.

Linklater, who introduced the blithe, but bemused slacker subculture to America in 1991, gets bogged down not only in Bogosian’s for-stage structure, but especially his middle-aged perspective.
Though "subUrbia" comes with attractive young actors and an edgy, alternative soundtrack, the film’s cautionary tone clearly comes from somebody who hasn’t been dazed or confused for a very long time.

Course Description: A peaceful, quiet life in the suburbs has often been a crucial element of the utopic "American Dream." In recent years, however, this dream, of happy families and happy neighbors, has taken on nightmarish qualities, as the violence and disillusionment of the "outside" world have intruded upon the subdivided landscape.
Whether it’s the trench coat mafia of Columbine High School or the blood-sucking vampires of Sunnydale, images of a suburbia under attack by shadowy forces permeate the media and popular culture.
Authors and filmmakers have long explored the dark underside of suburbia, and in this course we will examine and write about representations of suburban life which are inflected with an apocalyptic fervor.

Kunstler calls the project of suburbia "the greatest misallocation of resources in the history of the world" and says "America has squandered its wealth in a living arrangement that has no future." You immediately get the idea he's not exactly a fan of suburbia.
"The End of Suburbia" outlines the seemingly rational and logical impulse behind the project of suburbia, tracing the beginnings to the late 19th century when it was originally envisioned as an antidote to city life and an escape from the hideous aspects of industrialism.
Modern suburbia traces its beginnings to just after World War II when the suburban project took off with a massive housing boom and the increasing dominance of the automotive industry.

 Can America Survive Suburbia?
Around 1850, we began to get this impulse, among the wealthy--that is, those who can afford it--to flee the industrial city for its proposed antidote: the romantic suburb, composed of cottages in the natural landscape--which was made possible by another industrial novelty, the railroad.
This was the beginning of suburbia as we know it.
The automobile suburb of today in all its ghastliness--all those millions of tract house subdivisions-- the "American dream"--has become a cartoon version of a country house--as suburbia itself is a cartoon version of the life in the country--which is to say a mockery of life in harmony in nature.

``Don't tell us about private property--this is America!'' So says one of the slackers who hangs out endlessly at the mini-mart of a strip mall in ``subUrbia.'' He's shouting at the owners of a store, a Pakistani couple who feel, reasonably, that the constant presence of a half-dozen beer-swilling teenagers is not good for business.
What the Pakistani store owner sees (and tells one of them in a devastating speech) is that the lives of these young people are on hold.
``SubUrbia'' has been directed by Richard Linklater, whose movie ``Slacker'' (1991) gave a name to part of a generation, and whose ``Dazed and Confused'' (1993) caught much of its tone.
