Subwoofer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Subwoofers are usually powered by a high power amplifier, and often an electronic crossover with a Low-pass filter is used to ensure that higher frequencies will not be directed to the subwoofer.
Subwoofers are found in professional applications such as live concerts, movie theatres, various other sound reinforcement applications (ranging from nightclubs to theme restaurants) and studios.
The intent of a square subwoofer is to increase the surface area of the woofer's cone.

 Subwoofer
Because a subwoofer usually consists of one or two large drivers and no crossover it is a very easy speaker to design.
With any speaker, but especially with a sealed subwoofer, the enclosure is subject to large changes in pressure caused by the vibration of the drivers it houses.
I placed fl spikes on the bottom of the subwoofer and used the included metal discs to protect the finish of the base from the spike points.

Review: The Loud Speaker Kit S250 Subwoofer kit
Subwoofers need to be built like brick ablutions blocks, because they spend a lot of time trying to shake themselves apart.
This is all very well if you've got a multi-channel surround amp with a subwoofer channel, or if you're happy to deal with the processing and amplification yourself using separate boxes (dusty old receivers are popular candidates for repurposing into subwoofer amps), but it's not a plug-and-go option at all.
Subwoofers can play low enough that you can put them anywhere and not be aware of their location, but if you get placement wrong some parts of the room will be relatively bassless while others will sound like a car belting down the highway with one window open.

Hardware Analysis - Build your own 10" subwoofer, a detailed how-to - Introduction
Obviously the basic principle of a subwoofer is to extend the bass response of your loudspeakers, or add some extra push to the lower regions of the sound spectrum for home theatre use.
Due to the limited frequency range a subwoofer operates in, usually between 20 to 100Hz, all that is usually required is a large woofer able to move a lot of air in a properly calculated enclosure.
The boom you often hear from these subwoofers is caused by a peak in their frequency range that has nothing to do with an accurate reproduction of the recording.

 The placement of a subwoofer
Regardless of the order of importance between the speaker and the room, it is obvious that as well as the choice of a loudspeaker should be made with the greatest care, the same is valid for the attention to the acoustics of the room and the proper placement of the loudspeakers therein.
By using two subwoofers instead of one, and placing them in opposite corners on the same distance from the listener, (it is best done in each corner behind the main speakers) there will be an obvious reduction of the room resonances, while the directly radiated sound pressure will increase.
This is because a subwoofer as a sound generator does not have infinitely high mechanical impedance, it will therefore play the room resonances a little weaker when it is placed in the corner itself, than when it is placed in the sofa and we listen in the corner.

Building your own subwoofer is really not that difficult (especially if you get a relative or friend to do the woodworking for you!), and makes a great starting point for the beginning DIY speaker builder.
Finally, a subwoofer can be located anywhere in your listening area, which provides you with much more flexibility in positioning your main loudspeakers for good sound.
The more you are familiar with subwoofer design concepts, the better position you will be in shopping around for a subwoofer (or subwoofers) to suit your stereo or home theatre system.

The installation of a subwoofer underneath the passenger seat is a problematic task especially if the car is equipped with powered seats.
A slight disadvantage is that the forward distance of the passenger seat has to be limited.
Also the clamps for the seat forward motion limitation have to be placed on the gear drive that way that when the seat is up the rear tightening screws are just reachable.

As a consequence of this, your subwoofer is probably going to end up being the largest speaker in your living room.
Please note that there is NO requirement for the impedance of your subwoofer to match the impedance of your main speakers.
Typically, car audio drivers will not do well as drivers for a home subwoofer system, as they are usually designed to produce a good response when a car's cabin gain is taken into consideration.

 Subwoofer Placement Guidelines
And given the understanding that no room is ideal (not even a room with asymmetrical dimensions), the trick is to combine careful subwoofer and furniture placement (with the possibility of using two subwoofers) to more evenly distribute the deep bass frequencies throughout the room.
But soon as you put a subwoofer into a room, the sound waves bounce back and forth between the parallel surfaces of the room, some combining or "adding," which will emphasize those sounds, and others canceling each other out, which results in a null.
Adjusting the distance of the couch or chairs relative to the walls and/or the subwoofer relative to the corner will almost always be beneficial in helping smooth out the deep bass heard at several listening locations in the room.
