KES- USBR Endangered Sucker Fisf Update
Fish captured from 1993-1995 were generally in good condition with few parasites and full bodies.
Examination of sick and dead fish by fish pathologists indicated that a bacterial infection (Columnaris) was the primary cause of death.
Fish hatched in 1991 were the dominant group.

On the shelves above her desk was a fish bowl with 3 unknown fish inside, a small tank with 2 beta fish, a tank with her own beta fish, and the small tub with the two baby guppies.
In the large tank were the snail, the crayfish, the sucker fish, 7 guppies, and 4 goldfish.
The fish count reached a near-maximum of 21, but then the crab died, as well as one of the feeder fish (I noticed its decaying carcass caught in the filter, not the first time this has happened).

Conversely, most other Florida suckers (spotted sucker and several redhorse suckers) are much more elongate and slenderer than the chubsuckers, and although the mouth of the chubsuckers is slightly below the head, it is not nearly as far beneath the head as that of the spotted sucker and the redhorse suckers.
The anal fin of the male sharpfin sucker is not bilobed as is that of the male lake chubsucker.
Spotted suckers and the redhorse suckers have protrusible lips which they employ to pick up food from the bottom and it is these extendable lips which provide them with the amusing local name of buglemouth bass.

Recent population estimates for suckers in the Lost River/Clear Lake watershed indicate their populations are substantial, and that hybridization is no longer considered as “rampant” as portrayed by the USFWS in 1988.
Sucker year class strengths for some years are now available because suckers killed during die-offs in 1995, 1996, and 1997 were examined to determine the age of the fish.
Also, based on the age structure of suckers determined from the 1997 fish kill, it was readily apparent that many older-aged suckers were in the population; from the early 1990s until 1997, it had been surmised that the age structure of the sucker populations were almost entirely younger fish.

Placid in nature these fish exhibit an almost 'clownish' manner, swimming along the edges and contours of the aquarium, occasionally swimming along plants or up the sides of the tank until they are inverted and drift back down to the bottom.
These fish also operate during the day, and almost immediately stop and rest when all lights have been turned off (in the aquarium).
Suckers get their names from the presence of a "toothless mouth and a comb like row of teeth on the pharyngeal bones of the throat" (Nichols, p.58).

This is a close relative to Siamese Algae Eater, and it is possible that specimens of this fish are sometimes found in schools of Siamese Algae Eater or "false siamensis".

The Flowerhorn Fish - Fish Facts - Breeding Techniques
Some people keep sucker fish in the tank together with the other fish because the sucker fish is known to be able to feed on the fish's waste and algae, serving as a good cleaning agent.
Also, although the Flowerhorn is a freshwater fish, even freshwater ponds and rivers have a certain concentration of salt, thus adding a little bit of salt in the water also helps to make the fish feel "at home".
The Flowerhorn fish is aggressive and territorial in nature, and it is not advisable to keep another fish with it.

The food-value of the June sucker is one of the major reasons LDS pioneers settled in Utah Valley.
The fact that the June sucker is not a bottom-feeding sucker but a plankton-eater made the June sucker a suitable game fish in the 17th century, but the fish is now protected by federal law.
June suckers are named after their June spawning season and often live between 20 and 30 years, which is two to three times as long as most trout.

Experts didn't expect the suckers to reproduce, as they were thought to require a river in which to spawn.

Lake-bottom vegetation is key for the June sucker because it provides a place for young fish to hide from predators.
