Suctoria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Suctoria are peculiar ciliates, which are sessile and lack cilia in the adult phase.
Most suctoria are around 15-30 μm in size, with a non-contractile stalk and often a lorica or shell.
Suctoria reproduce primarily by budding, producing swarmers which lack both tentacles and stalks but have cilia.

Ciliate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
The name ciliate comes from the presence of hair-like organelles called cilia, which are identical in structure to flagella but typically shorter and present in much larger numbers.
Cilia occur in all members of the group, although the peculiar suctoria only have them for part of the life-cycle, and are variously used in swimming, crawling, attachment, feeding, and sensation.
Some ciliates are mouthless and feed by absorption, while others are predatory and feed on other protozoa and in particular on other ciliates.

Suctoria   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Suctoria is one subclass of the class Phyllopharyngea.
The ciliature of Suctoria is reduced in comparison to other ciliate organisms, so much so that they actually lack cilia in the adult stage of life.
Suctoria are heterotrophs that feed on smaller ciliates.

Suctoria don't look like ciliates but they are.
There is a whole range of varieties in the way the asexual reproduction of Suctoria takes place.
Suctoria are intriguing little creatures but because they are so slow in all their activities it takes a lot of patience to observe them.

Phyllopharyngea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In both chonotrichs and suctoria, however, only newly formed cells are motile and the sessile adults have undergone considerable modifications of form and appearance.
Chonotrichs, found mainly on crustaceans, are vase-shaped, with cilia restricted to a funnel leading down into the mouth.
These are especially characteristic of the suctoria, which feed upon other ciliates, and are unique among them in having multiple mouths on each cell.

In some cases an adult may withdraw its tentacles, moult its pellicle and develop an equipment of cilia and swim away: this is the case with Dendrocometes, parasitic on Gammarus, when its host mnoults.
The numerous species of Suctoria, often so abundant on various ipeciesof Cyclops, are not found on the other fresh-water Copepoda, Via plomus and Canthocampius, belonging indeed to other families.
Again, these Suctoria affect different positions, those found on the antennae not being present on the mouth parts; the ventral part of the thorax has another set; and the inside of the pleural fold another.

They lack cilia, and these only become evident when the cell divides and produces a motile offspring.
Most suctoria have many mouths, each forming a long arm.

We analyze small subunit ribosomal DNA (ssu-rDNA) sequences to evaluate both the monophyly of the ciliate class Phyllopharyngea de Puytorac et al.
Classifications based on morphology and ultrastructure divide the Phyllopharyngea intro four subclasses, the Phyllopharyngia, Chonotrichia, Rhynchodia and Suctoria.
Based on this initial sampling, suctorian budding types are monophyletic, and exogenous budding appears to be basal to evaginative and endogenous budding.
