A call for resistance spread through the Orellana and Sucumbios provinces as residents clamored that they were hardly benefiting from the feats of foreign oil investors, such as Occidental Petroleum Corp. (U.S.), Burlington (U.S.), EnCana Corp. (Canada), and Petrobras (Brazil).
The strike was prompted by a failed concession on August 2 between local officials in Orellana and Sucumbios and multinational oil producers in the area.
On Friday, August 26 an agreement between officials from Orel- lana and Sucumbios and the national government was reached.

Palacio declared a state of emergency late Wednesday for the Sucumbios province, where Lago Agrio is located, and the neighboring Orellana province.
Residents of the Sucumbios and Orellana took over two provincial airports on Sunday and on Monday started blocking roads, overrunning oil camps and sabotaging oil facilities.
A Petroecuador executive told Dow Jones Newswires on Friday that early in the morning soldiers in Sucumbios had regained control of about 20 of the 80 wells in the Libertador oil field, restoring a little more than half of the 50,000 barrels of oil that normally flows daily from the site.
