Sud Aviation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sud Aviation was a French state-owned aircraft manufacturer, originating from the merger of Sud-Est (SNCASE, or Société nationale des constructions aéronautiques du sud-est) and Sud-Ouest (SNCASO or Société nationale des constructions aéronautiques du sud-ouest) on March 1, 1957.
However, the projected cost of the project was so high that Sud Aviation, at the direction of the French and British governments, formed a consortium with BAC in November 1962 to merge their design and production efforts to create the Concorde.
Sud Aviation merged with Nord Aviation in 1970 to form the Aérospatiale company.

 SUD AVIATION AND AEROSPATIALE
By then SNCASE had merged with another French planebuilder, Ouest Aviation, and had formed the powerful new firm of Sud Aviation.
Four companies built it: British Aircraft and Sud, along with Bristol Siddeley and the French engine-building firm of SNECMA.
Sud Aviation continued to expand, merging in 1970 with another rival, Nord Aviation, and with the missile and space group called SEREB.

Sud Aviation Caravelle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is generally considered to be the first truly successful jet airliner design, as the earlier De Havilland Comet had suffered a series of in-flight breakups that led to it being withdrawn from service, and the Avro Jetliner was cancelled due to overcommitment.
Sud's design licensed several fuselage features from De Havilland, a company Sud had dealings with for several earlier designs.
By this time most of Sud Aviation's design department turned to a supersonic transport of the same general size and range as the Caravelle, naturally naming it the Super-Caravelle, however this work would later be merged with similar work at the Bristol Aeroplane Company to produce the Concorde.

 Sud-Est/Sud Aviation/Aérospatiale Caravelle
The roots of the unsurpassed elegant and sleek design of the Caravelle, one of the icons of French aeronautical engineering can be traced to a memorandum issued in 1951 by the French Secretariat General of Commercial and Civil Aviation.
This memorandum solicited design studies for a medium range jet-transport capable of transporting 52 passengers or a 13,228 to 15,432 lb (6000 - 7000 kg) payload over distances between 994 and 1243 mls (1600 and 2000 km) at a cruising speed of 385 mph (620 kmh).
Extreme caution was execised by the French manufacturer, despite the very sucessful flight tests, to determine that the Caravelle would not suffer the fate of the Comet in its series of disasters.

Yimmy RE:English Electri versus Il-28 Beagle versus Sud Aviation Vautour - Rebuild 4/4/2006 6:18:05 PM I don't think the RAF TSR.2 and F111 issue could have been fixed with an upgraded Canberra, however the American B57G(?) varient of mid Vietnam vintage, capable of dropping laser guided munitions, was rather sexy.
I think the answer to the TSR.2/F111 was the uprated Buccaneer which was on the drawing boards at the time in competition with the Terapin for the TSR.2 requirement.

SNCASE (Societe Nationale de Constructions Aeronautiques de Sud-Est, later Sud Aviation, and subsequently merged into Aerospatiale), responded with a trijet design designated the X120, with three rear mounted SNECMA Atar turbojets.
