Sud Aviation Caravelle The SE 210 Caravelle was the first short/medium-range jet airliner, produced by the French Sud Aviation firm starting in 1955 (when it was still known as SNCASE).
By this time most of Sud Aviation's design department turned to a supersonic transport of the same general size and range as the Caravelle, naturally naming it the Super-Caravelle, however this work would later be merged with similar work at the Bristol Aeroplane Company to produce the Concorde.
In total 279 Caravelles of all types were built, with Sud Aviation's break-even point at the 200 mark.

 Sud Aviation Super-Caravelle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Super-Caravelle was a design for a supersonic transport from Sud Aviation in France.
Design work started in 1960 and was announced in 1961 at the Paris Air Show, but was later merged with similar work at the British Aircraft Corporation (originally the Bristol 223) to create the Concorde project in November 1962.
After starting the Concorde, the Super Caravelle name was instead used on a lengthed version of the original Caravelle design, the SE-210B.

The Caravelle was an exceptionally attractive aircraft, both on the ground and in flight.
Both the Caravelle's main wing, which was mounted at the extreme bottom of the fuselage, and its high-set tailplane were swept back and were without dihedral.
The first Caravelles were delivered for service to Air France and SAS in mid-May of 1959, and since that time a total of 280 have been built.

Of the first nine Caravelle I's, five went to Air France and the other four to S.A.S.; the tenth aircraft was completed for the Brazilian operator Varig as PP- VJC, the first of two ordered on l6th October 1957, and was delivered on 16th September 1959.
A well deserved tribute, both to the Caravelle and to the design team headed by Pierre Satre, came in 1964 when the famous Credit Lyonnais banking concern celebrated its l00th anniversary by establishing a prize of F150,000 to be awarded annually for ten years for outstanding contributions to French industry and trade.
The major change of this Caravelle is the extension of the wing leading edge at the roof as well as the bullet at the intersection of the rudders and the tailplane.

Other versions included aircraft with cargo doors on the side such as the Caravelle 11R and 10BR, and extended version the 10A which was 3 feet 4 inches longer then the standard Caravelle.

When the Caravelle first flew in 1955, it was a pioneer aircraft from several points of view.
In the beginning of their service, the Air Force Caravelles were used mostly for transports.

Designed in response to a requirement by the French Secretariat General of Commercial and Civil Aviation (SGACC), the SUD Aviation X210 was initially designed as a three-engine "tri-jet" to meet the range and speed requirements.
One the more powerful and efficient RR Avon turbofans became available, however, the design quickly matured into a two engine airframe.
The SUD Aviation 210 Caravelle program was officially launched in 1956 with an order by the French flag carrier, Air France.
