Nigeria won the African Nations Cup twice (1980 and 1994), and also won the gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics.

On 9 December, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan stated that he was "alarmed at the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Darfur region of the Sudan, and by reports of widespread abuses against civilians, including killings, rape and the burning and looting of entire villages".
Sudan signed the Mine Ban Treaty in 1997 and on 13 Ocober 2003 it ratified the Convention on the prohibition of the use, stockpiling, production and transfer of anti-personnel mines and on their destruction (Ottawa Convention).
Sudan has an obligation under the treaties it has ratified and under customary law to protect the rights of everyone in its territory.
