Sudbury is the location of the Wayside Inn, an historic landmark which claims to be the country's oldest operating inn.
In August 1925, a Sudbury farm was the scene of a riot between local members of the Ku Klux Klan and Irish-American youths from the area.
Sudbury is bordered by Wayland on the east; Framingham on the south; Hudson, Maynard, Marlborough, and Stow on the west; Concord on the northeast; and Acton on the north.

Sudbury was incorporated September 4, 1639; adopting, as its name, that of a town in the county of Suffolk, England.
It is situated a little to the north of Mill Village (South Sudbury), on a point of land rising gradually from the highway, and near the spot where the action occurred.
Sudbury sent about 140 men into the Union service during the late war; and but one of its citizens was killed in battle; only one other was wounded; and but one died in a rebel prison.

Sudbury's earliest townspeople and merchants were not shy when it came to making their needs known, and the Town Meeting seems to have been created as the perfect vehicle for accomplishing that.
In 1954, the Sudbury Highway Department issued a report that stated the town's growing fears succinctly: "Sudbury is about to evolve quite suddenly from a small country town into a congested residential suburb." In 1955, Sudbury was identified as one of the 10 fastest growing towns in the state.

The usual sequence of events was NOT followed in the 1780 division of the post-1730 Town of Sudbury in that it was the residents of the EARLIER-SETTLED eastern area who petitioned the General Court (the legislature) for and received permission to found a NEW Town having a NEW name (East Sudbury).
The 2003 population of the Town of Sudbury is estimated to be 17,423 residents.

For those of you who are new to Massachusetts or to the public schools, I would like to take the opportunity to explain the role of the school committee.
In the early 1990s as Sudbury’s student population grew, it was not uncommon to have classrooms with large numbers of students in them -- some first grade classrooms had as many as 27 students.
Massachusetts municipalities must comply with a state mandate known as Proposition 2 _, which limits raising property taxes on an annual basis to 2 _ % of the previous year’s operating tax rate, unless an override is passed both by Town Meeting and a general election.
