 Sudbury railway Station, Suffolk, England, UK
After frantic local campaigning, Sudbury was fortunate to escape the infamous 'Beeching Axe' of the 1960s, although all passenger services to the north of the station to Cambridge ceased on 6th March 1967.
Sudbury is now the terminus of the short branch line from Marks Tey, with intermediate stops at Chappel and Wakes Colne and Bures.
Originally called the 'Stour Valley Line', this short Suffolk branch line was briefly known as the 'The Lovejoy Line' (after a dour BBC TV series about a local antique dealer) and more recently, 'The Gainsborough Line', after the famous local artist, Thomas Gainsborough (born 1727).

The original Piccadilly line, which was opened on 15th December 1906, consisted of 15.3 km (9.5 mile) twin tunnels from Finsbury Park to Barons Court and a short section of surface track on to Hammersmith.
The Piccadilly line was the first of the deep-level tube lines to be converted to oneperson operation (August 1987), where the operator drives the train and controls the operation of the doors.
Southgate station is in a short separate tunnel section, as is the line beyond Hounslow West serving Hatton Cross, Heathrow Terminals 1, 2, 3 and Heathrow Terminal 4 stations (except for a short section on the surface between Hounslow west and Hatton Cross where the line crosses the River Crane).

Nevertheless, when the line opened between Baker Street and Lambeth North on 10th March 1906, over 36 000 passengers were carried despite the fact that the cricket season had yet to start.
The Bakerloo line covers 23.2 km (14.5 miles) and serves 25 stations, of which 15 are managed either by other Underground lines or, north of Queen's Park, by North London Railways.
The Bakerloo Line is the only line on the Underground to run trains in passenger service through a depot at Queens Park, where a depot is situated immediately North of the station.

In July 1860, the newly formed Sudbury and Clare Railway Company revived the 1847 Act and by a new Act of July 1860 they were empowered to build a line from Sudbury to Clare via Melford.
The Act renewed the authorisation for the proposed ECR lines to proceed with the addition of a connecting line at Haverhill between the Stour Valley and Colne Valley railways.
The line to Sudbury survived several further attempts to close it and after the 1974 energy crisis and the threat of petrol rationing it was reprieved in the interests of the local community.

As for the East Suffolk Line, there was an incident in 2002 where a train hit a lorry over an open crossing, derailing the leading bogie of the single car unit, but the many other farm crossings along this line are common for near misses as per the Sudbury Line.
Nice to know that Mr Whittingdale has been assured that the line is safe, however we must all remember that it was his party and their blind doctrinare stupidity that gave us the dogs breakfast of a railway that we have to endure today.
As regards closing this line, or replacing it by buses, Tim Clark, the MD of 'One' told John Whitingdale MP on the 11th December 2004, that one regards the service as a key stategic service and has absolutely no plans to close the line.

At the road turn left and follow it northeastwards for a short distance until some power lines appear overhead, and then turn right to join a footpath that heads south, before slowly curving to head in a more easterly direction, heading downhill to end at a road near the church in Lamarsh.
Carefully cross the railway line on the pedestrian crossing, and once on the other side follow a footpath that skirts the western bank of the River Stour as it flows southwards.
The road twists and turns before crossing the railway line on a bridge; the road turns to the right to skirt the railway line to Marks Tey station, which is a few yards away down an access road to the right.
